The C-1 sounds fine, have no real problem with it at all. The 416 has the edge because although when I looked at it the level appeared lower the sound was full and although a bright read the warmth came through nicely.
Let's see how a produced spot would sound ..

they both sound good. main diff is, at the end of the c-1 audio, i hear a guy say 'great!' but not at the end of the 416.
there's a bit of ringy ring in the c-1 audio. my ears are SO sensitive to that because it's what i'm fighting in my studio (when really, i should just get a new mic). _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

...or headphones.
Sometimes the fit of my 'phones creates the tiniest bit of feedback.
I've grown used to it apparently— I normally make adjustments if I hear it. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Thanks to PB and PB (Philip Banks and Pinto Bean) for the input here, and thanks also to everyone who contacted me off the board.
The consensus of the folks who don't like the 416 is that it sounds "muddy" in parts, or "boomy", and the folks who don't care for the C-1 say stuff in the realm of "sharp" and "icy".
As Banksey has shown, it really does depend on the mix.
FWIW, Dieter preferred the C-1 for "brightness".
It's all interesting.

Deirdre,
I think you would sound good on a tin can and string. So while I like them both I marginally prefer the sound of the 416. _________________ Be well,

I like them both too. Just a matter of choice for either you or the client.
Mostly though I like them both because Bob does.
jk. You sound great on both of them...like I said...I would love to hear you on one that gave you the best of both of them...Not sure what that is though. |

It's no secret that I believe the 416 is best used for other things and that if a VO finds a mic from the myriad manufactured in China which works fine for them they should use it. We sometimes need to think about the signal chain that doesn't include room, voice, mic, lead, pre, soundcard, Antelope and enamel bucket. If it works, it works may make sense at first glance but .................
For daily use I wear this ....
When out and about in my posh frock I wear this .....
If you ask me the time on a Tuesday morning or ask me the time on a Friday evening at the 1629 in Lossiemouth I'll be able to answer your question.
There's comes a time in a Voice Overists career when it's more about total signal chain than it is about mic signal chain.
Career signal chain? Where mics are concerned you have 3 mics from which to choose, they are, in order of preference (NOT TECHNICAL PREFERENCE) Neumann TLM103, Sennheiser MKH416, Neumann U87. When you are living the VO life and making either all you choose to make or more than enough for anyone then you can buy the Series1 Enamel bucket because by that time you will be standing sufficiently far apart from the herd that it will make no real difference, you're going to get hired whether you like it or not. |

I'm leaning on the 416 but listening through my laptop so it's not worth much. Produced it sounds fantastic, too. I have a feeling you'd get hired with either one of them, even if you weren't wearing a watch. Do you use a certain one for certain clients or type of production? I'm about to integrate my new mic and putting together a list of clients that I'll need to keep the old mic for. If I don't write it down my brain will fail me. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

I prefer the 416 in this case for you. The C-1 captured lots of essing while the 416 didn't. The C-1 captured almost no low end of your voice and it was therefore impossible to add any back using my editing program. The 416 had lots of low end which I could modify easily. The 416 wasn't quite as crisp but that too could be adjusted with just a tad of eq'ing if it's desired.

The 416 sounds more intimate to me. Like you were speaking more directly to me. Closer.
The C1 sounds good, but more like someone talking into a mic, if that makes sense.
I think 416s sound great on seasoned talent who really know how to use their voice and microphone. DB certainly qualifies. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

I vote for the 416.
I find that the 416 can sound boxy unless I work it close, so I do. And that's not just for whispery reads, but pretty much for everything.
So, test-driving a 416, are we? |

The 416 has a touch less sibilance. Not sure if that equates a touch more low end.
And vice-versa.

I like you on the C1. The 416 has more low end, but it just doesn't do it for me. I'm a former jilted 416 owner. They're just boring to me.
Look out for the new Studio Projects CS1 and CS5...you can have it bright or roll off the top a touch, and it's an improved generation of the C1 (guts and capsule, etc). Kinda naturally sounds like a mix of the c1 and the 416 or even a 414 B-ULS in a way.
And yes, it does depend on the mix...the c1 will work for some things and the 416 will be better for others. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover
