I've been doing work lately for a local production company that is creating commercials for a marketing group out of Atlanta.

I have a question. I have a rate for a regional spot, and a rate for a national spot. Now, when I do a V.O. for a spot and then create some insert tags for different markets, ie Chicago, Nashville, Cleveland. Should those count as National or are they still regional?

And on top of that, if the three spots I record plus the four sets of tags which would really be 12 different commercials... should I be paid for 12?

I'm confused by the new math.

Three of the tags are part of the original 3 spots, correct? So, unless I'm not understanding what you're asking, that would be 3 spots and 9 tags for which you should be paid. At least, for the sessions I do, that's how we would figure a situation like that. As for whether regional or national, the 3 would be national since they run in so many different parts of the country.

Or, you could see if you could charge them for 12 regional spots; but I think it would have to be one or the other.

National usually means truly national as in playing on national networks heard in every corner of the USA. Of course a regional can play in so many regions that it ends up as good as a national.

Bob's right that the first tag is often considered a freebie because it's part of an "original" spot and every one after that is an alternate tag, but that's usually meant for one broadcast area, i.e. Boston, or California, or the country. If you're doing custom tags for each city I'd be tempted to charge for each one.

So I'd say go for a regional spot rate for each basic commercial and some kind of a tag rate for each insert.

Also, don't forget that if they don't send you all the tags for one session (i.e., you get different tags on different days or sessions), your minimum session fee should apply.

Right, that makes sense, as more regions come on line, I set a rate for doing each tag or each batch of tags for the new region.

I don't want to be greedy but don't want to be underselling myself either.
