I wanted to post this in segments as the day unfolded, but the train did not have an internet connection. Pretty wild, considering this here bus does.
Here's how Friday panned out:
9:00am I'm in place here at South Station, waiting for my train to be called and guess what— Instead of piped-in music there are two violinists playing all kinds of standard tunes and songs from Broadway musicals.
Such a joy!
Now they're playing "Matchmaker" from Fiddler on the Roof.
9:15 left smack dab on time.
I neglected to check my camera battery even though I looked right at the charger last night! What a dope. So now I have a whole day in front of me and a very low camera battery. Can't find the WiFi connexion. Working on Pamela Chollet's website— trying out font choices.
This train is FAST.
10:29
Worked on Pamela Chollet's font and font style for an hour.
Yeah, really.
hammered on my own web site for an hour.
Arrived at around 1— there was a little delay on the train. I got out of Penn Station at 1:15 so I decided to wend my way to the studio. I got there around 1:30 and got to meet some of the other guys who record there. Michael Csurics came in right at 1. Everything was really relaxed and jolly. We yakked about music and playing in a band, which Michael had just done— his band Soy Dracula played here in town last night. Then we got to work.
We were on phone patch with a fellow, Jason, in California.
We really beat the heck out of the few scripts I had. All these little audio diaries in the game matter a great deal because they sometimes give you clues on what to do in an area.. I read parts for the maintenance chief, a snotty socialite wife and a tired prostitute. The scripts were good, and the characters were fun to figure out. One of them screams when something nearby crashes.
I am SO GLAD I got the scripts last night! I had characters I could just step into.
Plus, I had the right scream ready, so I just needed to scream 3 times and i got the perfect voice-break scream.
I don't know how many of these thing we did today will make it into the game. Revisions are apparently constant.
It took just an hour.
Then we gabbed for another hour.
Michael is the one who got the job at 2K Marin that I had applid for— the dialog co-ordinator. Thank goodness it's him! I don't need to secretly shake my fist at 2k for hiring an idiot instead of me— they hired a hugely capable guy.
Michael says he likes to record in New York because the actors have more fun. He asked me why I didn't have a New York agent and I just had to smile and say "that's a good question!" He said he couldn't figure out why I wasn't showing up in his casting calls. I asked if he could just send me a note when he needed an audition and he said he would from here on in.
Met up with Paddy-O after the session. We met at Madison Square Garden and had a little nosh in an Irish bar right caddy-corner to Penn station. Dang, that station is big. Hung around in Penn station with Paddy laughing and joking until my train was called we got coffee at Tim Horton— it was pretty good! I needed it, the one glass of wine I had with supper went straight to my head.
9:00 The train home was delayed at Penn station to start, and now we are waiting on a siding for another train to pass— we're up above Stamford somewhere.
I fell asleep playing FFT A2. I have one of those little horseshoe pillows thank goodness. I was able to get a couple of seats to myself and just stretch out a little and i crapped right out.
9:35 Looks like we won't get into south station in time for me to catch my danged bus, which means it'll be a whole nother hour before I can get a bus home. Mega meh. It might not be so bad if I could get an internet signal. I've been seeing "Free Public WiFi all day on the train, but it's not an internet connexion.
9:46: at the bottom of 128. I'm going to pack up and see if I might just MIGHT be able to make the C&J bus.
Train arrived at 10:02, so it was already too late. Phooey. just have to hang around South station— and I don't have anything to read, dammit. I also forgot to put chapstick in my bag again— what the heck! I usually have a lipstick in my computer bag, but I thoughtfully cleared it all out when I got home from Austin. What a dolt!
I didn't get to see Anthony this time around, he was just too busy, but I hope there will be a "next time" real soon. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Deirdre,
Sounds like you had a fun, successful day with potential for future gigs. At least the public transporation went well in one direction. It was most important to get there on time. Returning home always seems to take twice as long even when everthing is on schedule. |

The most disturbing thing I saw yesterday on the train southbound to NYC was a woman who was CLEARLY ill. coughing, bleary, miserable. If she didn't have a fever, I'd be shocked.
I like to travel in the quiet car, but I seriously considered moving.
If you must take a kind of mass transit, for heaven's sake wear a surgical mask if you're that sick. Keep your freakin' germs to yourself.
I bleeb I'ma get some masks for myself next time I need to take a group conveyance.
My voice is tired today. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

In Boston's South Station, they don't have piped-in music.
When it can, AMTRAK leaves right on time.
I took this from MY side of the glass.
Michael Csurics the director, me, and Dave the engineer. After all the screaming is over. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I only did the soup diet for a week this time around.
The wine went straight to my head because of the get up at 5:30 and travel to New York City diet. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

The travel to New York City diet is a wonderful thing. Lots of walking and lots of laughter.

I have no doubt you'll be making that trip again very soon, db!!! Sounds like you kicked ass during that session!
And, I too hate it when people go out in public when they're sick. HATE it. And, I have no problems moving away, etc. from their hacking, sneezing, runny self. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Sounds like it was pretty perfect. Well, except for the coldhole. DH had a coldhole on his train the other night and we talked about how grown people should know how to cover their stuff up. Grossness. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
