|
|
Adobe Audition is my go to voiceover program for lots and lots of projects, auditions, etc...I'm also pretty secure with ProTools, but the editing in Audition seems far quicker.
However, I can a chance to check out the demo of Sound Forge and it seems like a very easy program to navigate, and in a couple of hours I was doing pretty much the same type of editing I was doing in Audition.
Anyone have and thoughts on one vs the other? |

Never felt or indeed had the need to change from Sound Forge. |

Ahoy Skipper
Cool Edit (now Audition), Pro Tools, WaveLab, Nuendo, Cubase, Sound Forge. Have and used them all.
I started with Sound Forge 1.0 and have kept progressing.
They have a great support staff.
True story, I was using Sound Forge 5.0. Sony had bought Sound Forge. For what ever reason 5.0 was being a problem for them but not for me and they stopped supporting it.
I called them with a question about 5.0, that’s when I found out they were not supporting 5.0 so they sent me 7.0 instead. I was tickled and to my thinking, that was a mighty fine gesture. I use 9.0e now and thinking about upgrade to 10.0
Its a good tool to have in your tool box. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

I've never used Audition so I can't do a comparison. But Sound Forge comes with the very useful Wave Hammer (a sophisticated compressor) that I use all the time. I'm sure Audition has similar tools, but I get the impression that Wave Hammer is unique.
I've been very happy and productive using Sound Forge, and use version 9.0 now. _________________ Best regards,

Audition doesn't really have anything similiar to Wave Hammer. Wave Hammer is a compressor/limiter/loudness maximizer. There are other things like it on the market though, like PSP Vintage Warmer, Sonalksis mk519, a Logic Audio Compressor that has built in limiting, Waves V-Comp, Ozone and T-Racks, and probably a few others.
Some of the other plug-ins in SF do seem a bit dated though, looking similiar to SForge 1.0 and 2.0, from back in the Sonic Foundry days.
After having a little more of a chance to play with SF, it seems like the fact that its not a multitracker is to its advantage. Being completely dedicated to VO edited and processing gives it a streamlined feel. |

If you have SF and you have AA "refresh the effects list" and you now have Wave Hammer in AA.
This also updates the Waves bundles you might have or any other Direct X effect. Update the VST list to make sure you have all of your VST capable effects in your list as well.

The full version of SF is a multitrack software a . The studio is not. |

If you mean multitrack as in laying a music bed over a VO, I have Sound Forge 9 full version and there's no multitrack capability...unless I'm missing something...I thought Acid and Vegas were the multitrackers
I seem to have hit a brick wall as far as dropping volume changes or automation over sections....I tried to decrease the volume of the exhalation of a breath after a phrase, selected the breath, selected the volume or gain plug, previewed the change, but after a few tries at this, the software locked up and I lost the complete take....this happened twice....
Audition 3 has that little fader above a selected piece of audio, where you just dial down...very simple
could be pilot error, of course |

The SF 10 is a multichannel which is probably a different thing than multitrack so I should probably say it correctly. I also use Vegas for multitrack.
With SF, even the studio, you can mix music under or over a VO track to create a mixed track. Not sure if I understood that statement you made correctly. Use Control+M to mix.
The issue you are having with dropping the volume on a highlighted segment is not functioning properly on your system. You should be able to do that with no problem. Send tech support an issue and they should be able to help. Could be a conflict with another program running or your system. |

SF is NOT a multi-track software editor. It IS a multi- channel editor however.
What is the difference? A multi-track editor will allow you to see and edit each of many tracks in one "view". It is precise editing. This is what those folks familiar with ProTools or other MULTI-TRACK editors are very familiar with.
Multi-channel editing allows one to layer each channel for Surround Sound featured file formats (AC-3, etc.). One can edit each layer - usually individually and independent of the timeline; however this is not a precise feature.
Nuff said.

I still don't see how you can do this. Frank is correct, SForge is a mult-channel editor, not a multi-track editor (like ProTools, Audition). If it was, then no one would buy Acid or Vegas and I don't think Sony would shoot themselves in the foot like that. There might be some way to mix a music under a VO, but I don't think that's the right application for SForge. It would be like cutting your lawn with a hedge trimmer.
OKay, sorry if this is rudimentary, but here's how I've come to edit volume changes for selected audio in Sforge..
1)select audio> right click "volume envelope"> adjust volume slider> hit "preview" button> hit "process selection> hit "remove selected plug-in" > close preview plug-in chain window
or
2)select audio> go to "process menu" and "volume" > adjust gain slider > hit preview > hit "ok".
method #1 is where I ran into some problems with the program crashing.. |

I said: "The SF 10 is a multichannel which is probably a different thing than multitrack so I should probably say it correctly."
So yes it's "different" than multitrack as Frank clarified.
So that's out of the way.
Now back to the problem you have with volume. I've always highlighted sections and used the volume plug from the process menu, never used the right click method. It sounds like you have cleared up the issue. Does it work consistently? If not, then there is a conflict somewhere and tech support can help you there.
Another thing you can try if you don't want to adjust the volume is to fade in the breaths. Just hit it once, twice, three times a lady or more and it will also work as a fix.
As far as mixing. Have you tried using the Control +M funtion? I use it regularly to do voice over music for IVR. Works like a charm. |

Best I can understand Control+M, is it seems you can copy two mono files to paste to a stereo channel, or copy a mono (Vo track) to paste and replace L or R of a stereo channel.
So yes, you can do multichannel mixing, not mulitracking. |

I too use Sound Forge (recently upgraded to Ver. 10) for all of my simple editing work. I use Pro Tools when I need to produce something with more than one mono or stereo track. _________________ Be well,
