At the risk of giving up TMI, I want to heartily endorse using the Sonicare Elite electric toothbrush.

I've always been a thorough brusher, and went through the trouble of looking up reviews to find the best manual toothbrush. Whenever I went to the dentist for a check-up, the hygienist would always comment on how clean my teeth were.

Out of curiosity, I began experimenting with my wife's Sonicare Elite (she had a 2nd brush head). I liked it, and have been using it regularly for several months. The issue that sold me was that I read that brushes like this were good for the gums, and I've had issues with two particular teeth that had food traps.

Well, I just got back from the dentist and realized what a difference this brush has made to my gum health. The food traps are pretty much gone, and I used to get irritated often with one problem tooth in particular - not any more! I've heard that gum health is an overlooked aspect of overall health, and poor gum health is associated with a shorter life expectancy, even heart disease.

As a voice-over talent, my mouth is obviously very important to me. I recommend that everyone should look into a Sonicare brush (or a competing brand with the same technology).

'kay, well, i'll give up some tmi, too ...

optimal use of those electric toothbrushes requires 2 full minutes of careful brushing. so, i do 30 calf raises (releve) for bottom teeth, 30 for top, then 30 grand plie for bottom and 30 plie for top ... or something like that.

multi-tasking!

That's a great idea, Diane!

For those who don't know, the Sonicare Elite will beep every 30 seconds, so you know when to shift from front to back or from top to bottom. That way, you always brush for the recommended 2 minutes.

Wow a beeping tooth brush. Next we'll have a talking tooth brush... buzzer sounds "Get back there you, I didn't give you permission to move to the next quadrant".

And as for you Miss Diane---Stop being such a "Goody Two Shoes".

A beeping toothbrush is a great idea, I suppose.

I don't mean to change the topic; I agree completely that oral health is extremely important. But some of the products on the market today are... interesting, let's say.

I've been amusing myself with the progression of air fresheners. We've gone from spray cans, scented candles, and those mystery 'gels' inside plastic housings, to air fresheners that plug into electrical sockets, to those with little fans attached. And now we've graduated to air fresheners with... (drum roll) MOTION DETECTORS!

In the 1970s we laughed off the Pet Rock, but many of the folks who today turn up their noses and cringe at the thought of Debbie Boone's 'You Light Up My Life' are those who bought enough copies of the record to make it the #1 song of 1977. What will we think of motion detector air fresheners in 30 years?

As Mr. Spock would say, "Fascinating."

My question about those motion detector air fresheners is Who smells THAT bad that they need a shot of fresh scent every time they move? Reminds me of the routine George Carlin did about Wisk laundry detergent.

Remember- their tag line was "Wisk around the collar beats ring around the collar every time."....George Carlin's answer to that was "Wash your neck once in a while" within a few years, they stopped using that line. Sometimes it's just that obvious- but someone's gotta point it out. cool

Oh, thank you, Moe! I often liken myself to the child at the end of 'The Emperor's New Clothes,' who is the only one with the guts to say that the twit isn't wearing anything at all.

When the air freshener company came out with the one with the fan attached, I made a comment similar to yours: "Ummm... if we were to open the windows, bathe the dog and vacuum once in a while... we wouldn't need a little fan and could prevent more plastic from finding its way to the landfills." It seemed to make some folks uneasy.

Along that line, but on a more serious subject, I'm actually fearful that so many of us become quickly attached to products that haven't been in use nearly long enough for any long-term effects to be realized. The most recent example is the new eyelash thickener (no, I don't use it - mine are naturally lovely) which has been found to cause hair growth in other areas, eye color to change, and perhaps more.

Something that took everyone by surprise is acetaminophen (Tylenol). It's been on the market for decades. When it was introduced, large numbers of people made the switch from aspirin. But it was just recently revealed - and this is outrageous - that 50% of all liver problems today are a direct result of overuse of acetaminophen. (We learn so much from med/pharma narrations.)

I try to seriously evaluate and discriminate between things I merely want and things I actually need. With healthcare costs what they are, I'm not taking any chances.

Like Moe said, someone's gotta point this stuff out. Smile

To better health!

(edited to put acetaminophen in proper perspective)

Thanks for the info Tom!!! I used a battery powered toothbrush up till about 6 months ago. My dentist said that I had some gum issues on the lower right of my mouth... and I think it was from that brush, and my brushing too hard. I now use a plain ol' toothbrush b/c I think it keeps me from brushing too hard, but I am going to take a look at your recommendation.

Congratulations on your healthy mouth!!!

Caryn, with a Sonicare, you are not supposed to brush hard - the vibrations do all the work! So I would think it would be great for your gums. Ask your dentist.

My 12 yr old son's room definitely needs the motion detector air freshener. An open window is not enough and even after the dirty clothes are placed in the laundry room and sheets are changed - it still smells.

Everyone tells me it's a boy thing....

(Hello everyone, this is my 1st comment on vo-bb ever! I just had to respond. Count your blessings if you can't relate)

Shania will be bringing toothpaste, air freshner and CAKE to her first meeting.

Love my electric toothbrush and it's old - no beeps or anything. For those of you w/ wee ones, there is a new toothbrush that lights up for one minute. So not helpful if they don't have a mirror low enough but great if they can see it and keep it up for the full minute (they have bigger gaps and fewer teeth so they get more in less time, I guess). And for everyone else - stay away from those brushes that play a song. The same ear worm every morning may kill you.

Shania,

Welcome to the VO-BB! And I don't brush my teeth as often as Tom does, but I do brush every day. Ninja
