If I acted my age I wouldn't be making a big deal of this -- but it is just TOTALLY KEWL!! I'm in the new move "Amelia" .. but blink and you may miss me.
Got the role -- as an air racer in the 1929 Women's transcontinental Air Race (the first "Powder Puff Derby") -- because I fly and restore antique airplanes... one of my other lives... and ended up with more face time than flight time during the shoot.
I haven't seen the flick yet but I'm in the trailer and in the last PR pic on the Fox Searchlight Amelia site... so it seems I didn't end up on the virtual cutting room floor.
"Amelia" stars Hilary Swank and Richard Gere and opens this Friday.
Shamelessly self-promoting, I remain... _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee

Lauren,
The portrait on your website speaks volumes as to why the studio chose you... and yes... knowledge of aircraft and being a pilot helps too.
Looking forward to the movie!

Hi all - and thanks for being as tickled as I am...
Bailey, yer sweet about my web headshot, but I'm not sure they even knew what I looked like when I was hired as an aircraft handler. The fellow who called knows me thru our aviation connections (though he knows my day job is VO), but the studio didn't -- and frankly, when I got the call I just thought it was a really good practical joke. Seems the producers needed women who were comfy taxiing and flying really old aircraft and thought they'd have to go to California to find enough of them, but my area (near Toronto Canada) is a hotbed of antique aviation, with a good dozen women like me within spitting distance. Three of us were chosen. Day 1 of the week-long shoot we were getting the airplanes in position on set, ready to taxi/fly as required -- and everyone on set had to be in period costume -- the next thing I know the director has me front and center and it took off from there.
DB, the trailer shots are so fast, you almost have to TIVO frame by frame to see me, (my daughter has TIVO - that's how I saw it) but I'm behind Hilary Swank as she's walking off a podium in a crowd of reporters. I'm going to see the flick with hubby Friday, and hoping we don't look like dorks, but we'll be in the scenes of the 1929 air races (yup, hubby was there too - hired as aircraft security to keep the hundreds of extras from damaging the aircraft **grin** - we spent the week in our Winnebago parked outside the hangar where the aircraft overnighted. He has NO filmmaking experience so was all agog the whole week, and the director fell in love with him - even gave him a line!)
On lines: Hilary was having trouble with a line while we were in a scene together -- I suggested an alternate and she used it... If they don't cut it, I'll be the idiot at the back of the theatre screaming "writing credit!"
On Hilary: extraordinarily gracious and genuine. One of the shoot days was our wedding anniversary and she went out of her way to wish us the best. I was awestruck at the focus and intensity in her entire being when she was "on" - you could feel it radiating from her. Fascinating.
At week's end we were astounded to learn they were going to DESTROY many of the props: the huge red and white racing pylon, the food stands, the standup photo booths. Long story short, we came back the next day with 2 pickups and 2 trailers, the tear-down crew loaded us up and we brought it all home. The pylon is now our "predator-control tower" beside the hangar on our farm, looking down the runway. Really easy to find our place now!
Here's a giggler: they had wire mesh "period" garbage cans on set, and the props gang went nuts all week digging modern coffee cups out of them, tossed in by the hundreds of extras!
Hasser, I'd love to do aviation stuff -- doesn't seem to happen. When I was a TV news anchor/reporter the ND seemed to go out of his way to assign the aviation stories to folks who knew squat about it. Same in my on-camera stuff: I fly, I restore old aircraft, I restore and drive old autos, I renovate old houses and restore antique furniture -- and what do I get for my first Life network series host job? A bloody COOKING show.
Life's good.
Fly lots. _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee

Hey Lauren,
That's REALLY interesting about the antique aircraft & your flying them!
And a HOOT about taking the props home!
Hey Philip...maybe you & Lauren should have a race!
Thanks for sharing, and it's always nice to hear that "stars" are as nice as they appear to be! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

Lauren - what fun to read your stories about this movie - maybe you could post again after you see it to give us tips on how to make sure we see you! I'm really looking forward to the film.
It's amazing how much Swank looks like her character. |

Would this be the scene... or is there another trailer?

A beard suits some people but not Lauren. Was it a real beard or a stunt beard? |

Hi Bailey - nope, no me, no podium... maybe there ARE two trailers? Look for Hilary in that mustard-coloured/brown jacket, no fur, no collar. I'm behind her in a flying helmet...
