My Audio Technica (purchased used) finally blew its tube after 3 years of hard use, bumpy travel, etc. Thinking of going with a new AT tube mic, but I've been drawn to the Mojave Audio MA-200, which sells at $995. Any thoughts on this? _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Anybody can tell you about tube mics in the same range of the Mojave that are great for VO. For example, the Rode NTK (if you upgrade the tube) or K2, the Pearlman TM-1, Peluso, Lawson, Beezneez, etc. They are all highly regarded mics for VO.
What nobody can tell you is which one will sound best with your voice, your preamp, in your recording environment. The only way to know for sure is to try some out in your studio - but not many vendors will allow you to try out several mics and return the "losers." Try to find some that might be willing to do that (I don't know off the top of my head - though I think Mercenary might).
Somebody will probably chime in the with idea of hiring out a well-equipped studio for an hour and sampling their mics - not a bad idea, but it still won't replicate your own recording environment. And the more I'm in the home studio game, the more I realize what a crucial factor that is.
Bottom line, there IS no easy answer to your question. But I hope some of what I have to say is helpful to you. _________________ Best regards,

Mercenary is great for that - the UPS truck wore a trench between my house and Foxboro MA when I was auditioning mics. |

Thanks for the input, folks. These folks at Mercenary, Mary, they'd actually shoot me a Telefunken to try out? _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

I'd recommend hiring out a well-equipped studio for an hour and sampling their mics. _________________ Jeff

Or as my wife put it..."The used make and model you had worked well for 3 years in your studio set-up. Get the same one, new. And be done with it." _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Most Voice Overists make no sense at all particularly where gear is concerned.
You should jump one of 4 ways.
LA street cred - MKH416
Global street cred - Neumann U87
It works fine - take the advice of your wife
I'm a complete and utter tw*t - all 3 plus a Manley Gold Reference and 6 others one of which you claim makes your pauses sound more toppy around the bottom mid end. |

Drew, were you using the AT3060? It's a nice mic, but I think you'll find as you shop around so many great affordable mics have come out since that one did.
Now, what are you using as a preamp? You don't have to have a Silver Anniversary Series Butt-Kicker XtReMe1000az with the razzmatazz and the doo-hickeys. Still, there's a lot of nice clean options out there. Even the Centrance MicPort Pro sounds very good, and I use the pres on my Fast Track Ultra (ICs from THAT) on the road and I like them. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover
