As for auditions, no EQ, but I do alternate between 2:1 compression at -15db with 2-3db of makeup gain....or I record clean, but limit my peaks above -6db while adding no more than 2-3db of additional gain to get to -3db.

Jason:

So you send stuff out at -3db? I used to send out at somewhere around -3, then over the years I moved up to -1db. I remember having the opportunity to hear 4-5 auditions from different people (same script) and thought the hotter recording sounded best. What're your thoughts?

Thanks, Jim

This is very sound advice, Jason, and is what I recommend to my clients. Ask what they want, don't assume anything. If they don't know, have fun.
I hosted a VO Tech panel a few weeks ago and asked a similar question, how much processing for an audition? (I honestly wanted to know, as I used to recommend some processing, just like Bill G just said) The six on the panel, Kevin Gershan, Stewart Wilson-Turner, Beau Weaver, Zurek, Dan Lenard, and Andrew Feliciano said unanimously, NONE.
Whatever you do use, make it completely un-noticeable but effective. What do I mean? If you play it back and it sounds in any way "affected", think twice before sending.

I SO wished I could have gone to that!

Here's my thing though. I'm using an EV RE27 N/D, and without ANY processing, it just sounds like crap to me. Yeah, I'm trying hard to get out of that radio / I'm a producer mindset, but I wouldn't want to send out any audio that sounded like that. I've been freelancing for 10 years, and full time for one year (as of yesterday... happy anniversary to me!). What I use seems to be working, as I'm winning auditions... production houses, TV stations, agency work. I want to keep an open mind. But like Todd said, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Oh, I got my sweet spot back!

Agree with George...no EQ, but if you can add a smidgen of compression or slight limiting to help nudge things up to -6db or -3db (I wouldn't go higher than that) then do it, but only if it's not very noticeable at all. Being the loudest shouldn't help at all - they listen to so much they can tell what's hot just for the sake of being hot.

George, I'm quite surprised to hear all six said "no processing," but can you give us an inkling as to what their rationale was?

Fortunately, I'm very pleased with the sound I get through my Rode NTK w NOS tube without any processing - but I've always been adding Wave Hammer. At least for more natural, "real-people" type reads, I should probably skip that. But what about something that needs to be more "in your face"?

That's cause you are using a radio mic do vo work, naturally it needs a good deal of EQ. Choose the right mic, no EQ needed. But once you have a setting that works and gets YOU work, then STICK with it.

Thanks soundgun, I think that's what I needed to hear. I'm so used to the RE20 and it's variants. I've set them up for years. (I doubt anyone remembers the Valley 401, or 400 for that matter.) When I made the decision to upgrade from the RE20 to the RE27ND, it was a no brainer. Producing as much as I did in radio, it just sounded sweet to me. For use in any media. With a little tweaking, you could get some sweet sounds out of it. The way I look at it, I'm doing the producer a favor by making my voice sound it's best. I may be wrong, and please correct me if I am. I've been at it awhile, but I'm not too old to learn a thing or two.

Jim,

Yes, I send stuff out with a majority of my peaks a -3db.
There are still the occasional spikes that go a tad closer to 0, but not knowing what the seeker is listening on, I don't want to sound overmodulated on their speakers.
However, using the limiting or compression described earlier, I'm able to add anywhere from 2-to-3 db of extra gain while still coming in at -3db and maintaining much of the original dynamics in case the seeker is a pro who wants lots of room to adjust.

Also, I think it helps that I have a deeper register voice and use a 416 for most of my auditions and work.

I agree that some things sound better limited to -1db, but again, not knowing what the seeker is listening on, I don't want to be too loud. Full yes, but not too loud.

Later,

Jason

You guys are so pure!

I almost always EQ. A little. And please don't tell me that a great mic in a great room perfectly placed yadda yadda yadda.

Of course, aggressive or poor quality EQ can do more harm than good and most radio guys I ever met seem to think that EQ pots only go clockwise!

The trick lies in knowing where to cut and how much.

There's nothing wrong with killing the high end of a TLM 103 with EQ. Wink

There's nothing wrong with killing a TLM 103 entirely! In fact it ought to be a law.

All right— watch it in here.

No mic fights or I get the scissors out.
