|
|
Hello v/o BB'ers!
Long story short; built a new booth back in Feb and it was functional but far from perfect. Put in a large limp membrane bass trap which helped but still no cigar.
Onwards and upwards! Did some more work on it today and I'd be interested and grateful to hear your views.

Not a very scientific A/B, clips recorded a few days apart, different time of day etc. But hey ho!
It's not a test; the first half is the pre mod booth, second half with mod.
What do you think?
Big thanks! |

Slight boxiness in the first has gone in the second. B clip is also not boomy whereas clip A was boomy and boxy. By clip B the boxy boomines had gone ...Which is an good thing coz it sounds gooder! |

There is definite "Boxiness" and "Boom" in the first take, but it is also has
clarity in the upper mids. The second take, less boom and less clarity.
This can be remedied.
I'm wondering what the dimensions of your booth are, and what the material
is you used for the bass trapping. Is there broadband absorption also?.
Pictures will also help in solving the problem.
You can also PM me if you wish.

Yes you're right Mike. So are you Philip. Work in progress. Think I was so pleased to tame the low end cloudiness a little that I took my ears off the rest of it. Booth size is apprx 4 ft 6 in by 6 ft. There is large limp membrane bass trap in there, as well as a couple of LNRD's. What you may be hearing on the second clip is the result of less broadband absorbtion in my efforts to tune the room. It's a balancing act. I may add a couple of Monster Traps next to really cut into that 300 Hz hump and hope they offer some more mid range control too. |

Small booths like this are hard to deal with. This is where absorption on all
the walls will be very effective. I went to your web site and looked at your
booth. The pyramid foam might be doing an ok job at breaking up some of
the early refections, but I'm quite sure it's not doing much else, because
it's not dense enough. And, as we can hear, it's doing absolutely nothing
for the rooms resonance.
The surface area of the booth is 222 square feet; with some math I can
conclude you need about 96 square feet of 2 inch thick 703 fiberglass
insulation, on your walls and ceiling, plus bass traps.
96 square feet of 2" 703 would get your reverb times down to:
125Hz / 0.16 sec;
250Hz / 0.14 sec;
500Hz / 0.07 sec;
1000Hz / 0.07 sec;
2000Hz / 0.07 sec;
4000 Hz / 0.07 sec.
Perfect!
Four inch, would be even better but I would rather use that extra material
as bass traps, which will tame everything below 500Hz rather nicely.
This will eliminate the boxiness of the booth and its resonance. _________________ The Blog:

Three cheers and a big thanks for Mike (pm'd you!)
So, this should be a nice project for the Holiday season.
It'll be good to start again, it's been a bit Heath Robinson this booth. |
