I've just finished tweaking bit and pieces in my studio and the final change was the way I monitor audio. I bought a pair of Alesis 520 M1Active monitors and can thoroughly recommend them. |

Haven't "modernized" yet. Still using my battered and beloved JBL 4311's. Well over 30 years on them and still sound good. |

Be careful of the lower end M-Audio monitors..I purchased a pair of Audiophile AV-20's as an alternative to my computer speakers and they were a total piece of junk. One speaker went completely out after 15 minutes. In defense of M-Audio though, after much complaining they sent me a complimentary pair of discontinued Studiophile DX-4's that are very nice for small set of desktop monitors. |

Your 4311's came out in 74' or 75'..so about 35 years...wow...
still gotcha beat by one year though....got a pair of JBL L26 Decades....from 73'...still used for home theatre....solid Oak cabinets....had the speaker grills replaced and he woofers refoamed...disintegrated after about 20 years....work perfectly
the 70's was the golden age of JBL.. |

I have a set of M1 active mk2s that have worked great for the past several years. I am still very happy with them. |

I'm still monitoring through my Event Studio Precision 8's that I have had for a few years now. Totally overkill for VO, but they've been in my studio since the band recordin' days. Love 'em. They took a great deal of the surprise out of my studio "The Legendary Studio Surprise". It was originally named as such due to the fact that back then, when you mixed something and it sounded good in the studio, you were in for a "surprise" when you brought it over to a home or car stereo in the real world. Not a good warm fuzzies all over surprise either.
Nothing like finally liberating yourself from crappy, overhyped monitors. |

I'll jump on here and say I've got the same M-Audio BX5a units. These really do the job as rock-solid near-field monitors. The only thing I don't like is the fully exposed fronts... Kevlar cones or not, one day I'm going to trip over something and somehow push a pencil through them (or something equally as stupid).
Cheers

My wife Whitney is the VO artist and I do her tech work. I've been mixing music through my Yamaha NS10s for years, and they work great for VO stuff, especially if you're listening for detail on stuff like room sound, artifacts, or anything else critical.
Knowing the "truth" is the first step to any good mix, even if that mix is a single voice. |
