Found myself thinking about Don just the other day. And this article hits the nail on the head.

Interesting perspective. I wonder if there is a correlation. Thanks for sharing Philip.

I can't help but wonder if Queenan knows LaFontaine's name only because of the Geico commercials. I think we pretty much all agree that Don was great but it's not as though he was the only person doing movie trailers before his untimely death and everybody else is a Donny-Come-Lately. After all, there were four other guys riding in that limo.

Yet another Don LaFontaine article written by someone who knows absolutely nothing about the movie trailer business. While his opinion on DLF's talent and skills are dead on, his point about the "other" movie trailer VO's is way off.

No one is trying to replace DLF, these other "scrubs," as he indirectly refers to the other movie trailer VO artists, are simply bringing their own point of view to the art - some of them rather brilliantly, like Phil Terrence.

Perhaps I should write an article on golf (a sport I know absolutely nothing about beyond Tiger Woods and Chi Chi Rodriguez.) A real shame.

-Anthony

P.S. I am aware that this is op ed, but I'd suggest they bold the "OPINION."

What I found interesting is that he is acknowledging the importance of what Don did. The importance of his job - and that of the movie trailer VOs in general - in "putting people in the seats."

Yes, I think Anthony is right that there are many other VOs who are going this, but it also shows the outside world that this ain't just stepping up to the mic!

my thought was that some of the author's words were gonna piss off some of the other movie trailer vo talent, esp the one guy who voiced the trailer for gamer. or was there vo on that one?

I had the chance to meet Don's nephew at the DLF Fundraiser, and he said that Don always told him don't try to be like him and be an imitator, just be yourself. There are imitators as well as innovators out there. It's easy for the trained ear to hear the difference.
Thanks for sharing the article, Philip.
