Hi Everyone. I am new on the board. I'll try to keep this short.
I own some gear (I'm a video editor) and have a room setup for Editing and I used Auralex on the Walls and ceiling to make the room sound pretty good. I also made a VO Portabooth for recording my wife's VOs on the run.
The gear I own:
Protools 7 Mbox2
2 DBX286a's
SE 2200a
Studio Projects C1
NT1a
Symetrix 528 (found one on ebay cheap, waiting for delivery)
Looking at what I have, I was thinking of adding a Tube pre to what I have and I was thinking of getting a Presonus Tube Pre or even a Studio Channel.
I know, I'm a little all over the place. But the plan is to record my wife's VO's and I will be looking for a workshop to attend. I did record a few VO's my self and I want to do more myself. |

I've got 2 chief mics and 2 preamps/channel strips.
A Sennheiser 416 with a DBX 286, and a SP C-1 with a Symetrix 528.
These are good combos for me. A tube pre might be quite spiffy if you have money burning a hole in your pocket.
Wish I had more to add, but you look like you're pretty well stocked.
I'm sure others will be happy to disagree with me! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

The dbx is better than any preamp Presonus has to offer except for their ADL 600. I have owned or worked with many of their products and liked none of them. You have plenty of good gear to make a go of it. Good luck. If you find the C1, 2200 or the NT1A are a bit bright, go for the CS1 or CS5 from Studio Projects.
All three of those mics are in the same ballpark, so you might want to swap out one of them (and maybe get a dynamic?). _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Until you get to around $1200, the 286A is about as good as it gets.
If most of your work is going to become an mp3, don't waste money on tubes and boutique gear. My experience, anyway. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Thanks to all of you.
I just got the Symetrix 528 today, so I will be looking at the settings to get the best sound I can.
Lance, I did have a SM7b, I got rid of it today. I didn't like that mic too much. |

The manual has some spiffy settings in it to try out— did you get the manual?
Let me know if you want some settings for gating. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Deirdre
I don't have the manual. If you have a pdf of it or can share some settings that would be awesome. |

This is how I set the Comp/Expand control group for a spiffy gate for the C-1:

Thanks Deirdre, long day today... Maybe I can mess with it tomorrow. I'll post my thoughts, thank you again. |

Thanks again, That setting worked out. I tweaked a tad just to get the right sound in my room, but it was close enough. I still like my dbx, but the one thing about the symetrix is that the actual unit doesn't generate the hum the dbx does. It's very quiet. |
