'Trying to set up a session with a remote studio on Source Connect.

He's getting a strong and recordable signal from me, but there's a latent 1 or 2-second echo coming through on his speakers, and my speakers. Very distracting.

I'm using Source Connect Standard 3.1 on my Windows XP and Source Elements Desktop (not Pro-Tools) as my interface.

I'm running my mic through the Alesis MultiMix8 USB.

'Thought I'd run this past the tech-wizards here whilst I ply the Source-Elements help forums. Gotta get this figured out by Friday.

Thanks in advance,

CourVO

Courvo:
Using speakers on the voiceover actor's side is annoying to both sides of the recording session because the speakers are feeding back the studio's the signal into your mic. Always use headphones while using Source Connect.

If you have that all sorted and still have problems:
Is he hearing an echo of himself in his speakers?
That means you don't have a mix-minus setup correctly.
Do you hear an echo if YOURSELF in YOUR speakers?
That means he doesn't have a mix-minus setup correctly.
You must be sure that you aren't looping back the return from the Source Connect back into Source Connect. Send me a diagram of how you have your mixer patched if you need more guidance.

George,

Many thanks for that meaty reply!

We were both hearing the delayed "ghost" sound on both ends.

Yes, I always use headphones on SC.

The good-enough solution for us during the session came with toggling the enable/disable, talkback on/talkback off radio butto on the Source Elements Desktop interface on my end.

Having it "enabled" and "talkback on" brought the ghost to a bare minimum on his end, and unnoticeable on my end.

You're the best for offering that help!

Our friend Bob Souer would say "Take the headphones off" he-he! I also learned (from Bob) that a Simple sample rate change can cut the delay time. And one more note...the price of Source-Connect will be $650.00 starting Monday Feb 1st. Get it now!!!

Dave:

When you say a "ghost", that to me implies you hear the loop back very faintly, is that correct? If that's the case then it could be bleed from your headphones on each end getting into the mics.
That would explain why using Talkback mode helps, because it mutes the audio from the return when it is engaged.

Yes, George, you're right...it was always faint on my end, and when I toggled the talkback, it pretty much went away...

On the studio end, it was greatly diminished to the point of not longer being a nuisance.

...but yes, 'ghost' is probably the best way to describe.

Thanks again... that's an old pic, right? How big is Jr. now?

George, is that true about the price? What is it now?

Edited to add that I just did the research and found my answer.

Bill,

True, but only to a point. When I'm doing an ISDN, Source Connect or phone patch I do wear one headphone over one ear. That headphone gets only the sound from my director and none from my microphone.

Bob,
I do remember you telling me that from our session, and the trick works for me. Just doing a little kidding on the headphone thing due to the fact that I have been giving it a shot not using the cans. Also I foud the S/C template (you talked) to use for the sessions. Enjoy your day!

Bill,

No worries. I knew you were kidding. I'm just habitual about being clear, often to the point of annoyance.
