With a very talented "live" drummer brother in LA, I'm afraid someone who can program a machine to go boom-chicka-boom-boom-chicka-boom really fast doesn't impress me much. Lotsa noise but no heart and soul.

Wow... that guy rips it up pretty good!
However, a personal favorite of mine is Neil Peart of RUSH. Having seen this solo live in Vancouver, I can say without any hesitation that I've never heard a kit played any heavier than he plays! Look at that frickin' kit!

Oh yeah, apparently he's a pretty good golfer too Not sure what that has to do with anything _________________ Brian Forrester Voice Overs

Holy crap, that's a lot of drums. I pray my 13 year old NEVER sees Neil Peart's drum kit. The latest addition to the play room/music room - which is the room outside of my studio - is my son's drum kit. I think three cymbals is plenty...don't you? _________________ Moe Egan

Thanks for the Neil Peart link, Brian. It's funny looking at all the "best drum solo" links that come up after it. There are some amazing drummers out there, for sure. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

I saw/heard/felt the Japanese Taiko drummers last night. Oh my goodness, they made incredible sounds. If they come to you town, go see them. Amazing. The drums become something else entirely. The sound of the ocean, power, drama, love. And the wooden flutes were magnificent. _________________ Playing for a living...

I LOVE Taiko drummers. I've seen them a couple times. The most recent was in Dallas a couple years ago, but the first time was when I was working as a stagehand in my hometown's high school auditorium. I was working solo that night, so I helped them set up for the show, watched the performance from the wings, and closed up afterwards. The flow of their movements and the way the stage floor shook as they drummed still resonates with me to this day. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

If you like Japanese drummers and you also like Irish music, you may enjoy this odd combination of the Japanese drum troup Kodo with Irish musician Donal Lunny and his group Coolfin.

If you are afraid of him seeing Neil's kit...pray he never catches wind of Terry Bozzio:

BTW, Justin, if it hadn't been for your response to Bruce, I would have never clicked the second link. Listening to the song I lost the will to live about 30 seconds in. However, I couldn't stop watching him perform the track live. Amazing jazz chops sliced into an industrial = fantastic. Thanks for sharing. |
