As an iphone addict I hate flash since it doesn't work on the iphone.

But just now I tried to click on a link Anthony tweeted: http://bit.ly/9Yvymx and firefox is telling me to install an additional plugin but it doesn't know which one. This crap can drive me nuts.

For my new site I'm looking at different non-flash options along with a straight link for download.

Deebs,
Obviously I'm no techie, but I have Kafer's little flash player on my site & I love it.

The thing I don't like about Quiicktime players/demos when I see them on other sites (& this may well be my browser & me not knowing anything!) is that a new Tab opens up & takes me away from the site I was on.

Please ignore this post if it makes no sense or is irrelevant. Embarrassed Smile

I'm concerned about Mobile users, too, but I can't find an elegant solution to the Laptop/Mobile trainwreck.

Honestly though—how many people seriously audition stuff on their phones?

I use Flash plus a very nearby download link for each. Unfortunately, neither works with my iPhone so I've got to come up with a better mobile solution.

I don't know but I hate to rule it out just in case. One of the Wordpress plugins I've installed on Hart Voice Overs creates a mobile version and so far it works great - except for handling audio files because I'm using a flash player that doesn't degrade into a link. So I may switch to QT or something java based - yech java.

P.S. I read something just the other day that said that more people now have smart phones than the entire population of Mexico. Do you really want to exclude them?

It's not about exclusion, it's about practicality.

If I design for an iPhone, I'm assuming everyone has Quicktime Pro, and that's simply not true.

I'm a quicktime popup user. No loading on the site if you don't click the button. I don't know how many of my visitors have issues with popups like these but I do get a lot of plays.

I have a fabby pop-up player but one of my clients thinks pop-ups make people leave his site.

They don't— I can tell by tracking the visitors' usage with his site stats.

I prefer a player that streams rather than load as a file first. No waiting. Many people are using smart phones too. You would probably be suprised. Don't discount them. I just mentoined that to voices.com since their site needs work.

Many use smart phones other than the iphone too so watch those limitations. Use something that doesn't take time to load and plays nearly instantly. People (me included) won't wait for Flash and other items to load. I don't care much for the wait for youtube to load either.

I don't know what kind of file that would be, one that doesn't need to load.

flowplayer + h264.mov = happiness!

the h264 codec provides higher quality @ lower file size!

couple of good converters/compressors

HandBrake

FF Mpg

if you want to watch video on the web you have to have flash - and you have to have java enabled. other than that - anything i have to download to watch a video will make me not watch the video.

also - it's loading, greg, but it's doing it incrementally as it plays so you don't notice so much. whenever you save your video make sure you optimize for web streaming - otherwise the interwebs will want to buffer the whole frikkin' thing before it starts to play. flowplayer (probably others too) has an option to let the player to know WHEN to start playing: 5% loaded, 10% - based on the user's connection.

I am with Bob Bransom, Flash with a downloadable link option. Covers all your bases.

Speaking for myself, I often have problems with QT players and get a error message. Has something to do with my Java not updating properly. Many times I have been surfing and unable to listen to a demo at all, because of it.
