Hello all you voice type people!
Chris French here, and I am once again (still) on the outer fringe of the VO world. I do have more time on my hands now, my divorce was finalized on February 1st. Plus, I've been asked to audition for the lead character voice in an animated project called "The McGuffin Exchange" by a Minnesota artist named JJ Kocholek. He actually listened to some demos I had on Voice123, I think, and called me up two days ago. Only problem is, he has no script, just the video of the animatic that he voiced himself. Does anyone know of a program that is available that can take spoken word and transfer it to text off of a video? That would be a MAJOR time saver, as I don't really want to have to sit there and stop and start the video, just to get five seconds of dialog. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My only thought is that Minnesota artist JJ Kocholek should be the one transcribing the video. _________________ Moe Egan

I agree with Moe.
It's the client's job to get you the script.
If he voiced it, he probably has a script, unless he did it on the fly.
But in any case, it's HIS responsibility to get you the script to voice.

I guess it depends on what platform you're using. I've had very limited success with MacSpeech Dictate. The problem is that any decent speech-to-text converter will need to be trained to understand the voice of the speaker. This usually involves reading specific phrases until the program get a handle on your voice nuances. Throwing an unknown (uncalibrated) voice at an automated system will result in so many errors that you'll spend more time proofing and correcting than doing your own manual transcription from scratch!
I agree that the originator should provide the script... or if he doesn't want to do that, he should pay for your additional time and effort. The alternative is to use one of the many transcription services available. They usually run from $0.75 per minute and up. Just Google "Podcast Transcription". Maybe point the customer at these services and let him do it himself as a prerequisite... $50 for an hour is relatively cheap.
Cheers

If you're going to transcribe the video, make sure he understands that this is a separate charge on the invoice.
I'm guessing, he'll magically find a script for you after that. _________________ Jeff
