I've finished building new stands for my audio monitors.

Rather than re posting it all here you can read about the DIY Monitor Stand build on my blog. Please excuse the mess and the construction tools laying around.

Thanks for sharing your design.

Nice design... thanks for sharing.

... and thanks for reminding us all that no studio should be without a shop-vac, a power-drill and a banana Smile

Thanks for the comments guys. That banana is actually a Remo banana shaker I've had for years. My son likes to play with it when he's not singing The Bus on the Wheels into the RE20.

After listening to a bunch of music yesterday I've noticed a few other things. The mids and highs do seem to have a bit more clarity to them. For example on the Bangle's "Walk like an Egyptian" the vocal reverb is more present and the tambourine really cuts through, I feel like Rob Thomas' voice on the 2nd Matchbox album is right in front of me, and some classical I was listening to sounds much better. You can really pick out all the different instruments so I think the overall response is better. It's more like it was in my old studio.

Maybe the stands helped or maybe it was the fact I repositioned them in relation to the room and myself to better form that listening triangle. Could be both. I'm making so many changes at once it's hard to tell.

On the negative side there's something resonating in response to a lower frequency. I don't think it's the stand since it sounds like it's in front of the right monitor. Might be the desk. I'll have to track that down and fix it.

It really makes me want treat my main room but I've promised myself I won't start on that project until I've finished the booth and I have a full design planned out before I build anything.

Brian,

Wow! Beautiful job. Thanks for the link to the blog post, too.

Brian,

I didn't build my stands, (they're from Sound Anchor) the posts were filled with different amounts of a sand mixed epoxy resin so they would vibrate at different frequencies and the base of each stands rests on four fixed points to isolate the stand (which might work for your design).

I'm checking out their website now. I've debated some sort of spikes, I'll have to research that some more. The other thought I've had is to place some neoprene "pucks" under the stands for isolation but I don't know how that would compare to the spike concept.

So, and I may be using the wrong term here, but the sand is damped with resin. That would be interesting to try. Not sure how I could do different levels though. My first thought was to use joint compound but then I figured it would crack over time. I wonder what kind of resin they use? It would be easy enough to take the tops of my bases and experiment.

Kevin, thanks very much for posting. Those look very cool.
