Forgive if this has been addressed before..(I'm sure it has), but you know, markets change so here goes the question again.
Any suggestions for a good, basic, easy on the budget, general purpose production library for VO Demo production?

How about a little more info. Is this for your demo or are you planning on making demos for others?
What kind of demo or demos?
There are lots of sources for music and sound effects in various price ranges.
For licensing by the song I like www.mymusicsource.com
There are some good sound effects and loops parts at www.soundsnap.com
www.digitaljuice.com puts their stuff on sale a lot so if you watch you can catch some good deals.
If you google for "royalty free music" a lot of sites come up. It's a way to find music for cheap or free - just check the licensing to be sure you can use it. If it is available for commercial use it's still a good idea to let the owner know you want to use it. The only problem with this method is you have to wade through a lot of junk to find the good stuff.
www.findsounds.com is great for finding sound effects. It's free, but again you have to wade through a bunch of stuff to find something good. I get a leary of it for copyright reasons, especially with commercial work but for a demo you might be fine.
There are a ton of sites out there is this is just a small sampling of what I sometimes use but I didn't want to overload you. Hope that helps.

I find the Digital Juice Backtraxx libraries (1 and 2) to be spectacular values for the money...something like 32 CD collections for $99 or less each.
Bad news, they don't sell them anymore.
Good news, they're frequently available for even less money on Ebay!

Producing others, demos...yes Commercial/Narration/Character
I've used some of the pay per song sites, and found them helpful.. |

the current Digital Juice deal is $79 for 5 collections or $149 for 10...about 50 to choose from... I started going thru them but don't have the time to sift thru 50 collections to find out which ones might be the most useful |

I have Backtraxx 1 (a 5 CD set)
and a handful of Stacktraxx volumes.

Sonic Fire have recently had all kinds of crazy specials!! Not sure if they still on, but take a look. Although, their "special" prices are the same as Digital Juice's regular prices, I just prefer their convenience of downloading.

It sounds like you're describing DJ's Stacks music CD's and not the Backtraxx collections. Huge difference.
Stacks are smaller collections on 4 CD's. There are about ten tunes on each CD and each tune is broken down into something like 8 different instrument tracks, and with their software you can create a music bed with our without any particular instruments. Nifty if you want to repeat the same music through a long piece but want it to sound different each time.
Backtraxx collections contain 30+ CD's of just music and they're easy to manipulate if you load them all onto a hard drive and then use something like iTunes to play them through (mine are in high quality mp3 format for space consideration). You can use the search function to narrow it down to Rock, or Foreign, or Comedy, and I've started to use the comment section to label certain cuts so they're easy to find later.
Now, in its final year or so Digital Juice put Backtraxx out on just a few DVD's instead of all those CD's but I've heard from a friend that they are very difficult to search through and download. I'd say stick with the CD versions.

I have both Digital Juice's Backtraxx sets and most of their Stacktraxx- good stuff! I also have their SFX libraries.
Lately I've been finding a lot of music at musicloops.com. They have a good selection of children's music which is usually what I'm looking for. They have multiple categories, and you can download on the spot.
I just had another friend tell me about Sonic Fire- I'll be checking them out too!

Yep, as I said above, they don't offer them anymore. However, they were really inexpensive on Ebay a few months ago when I looked for a friend. Sadly there are none available there at this writing.
Keep hunting for used sets. I think you'll find they're worth it.

the Backtraxx are re-issued every so often. you can sign up for emails from digital juice (and you'll get one every single day) that'll let you know what they're running specials on. a lot of their stuff is synth, but i do like what they have using real instruments, when it's not full of loud brass.
my favorite source for buyout music is d.a.w.n. music. very inexpensive downloads, by the track. many libraries represented. sound effects by-the-cut as well. i don't have to buy 70 tracks of rock and rap i'll never need, to get the contemporary cut i want. and if you're doing work for others, the cost is very easily folded into the project price. music bakery is another good source for downloads. both sites let you audition the full cut before you buy. i've also found some good stuff on music2hues, which runs sales on collections periodically.

I'm still wondering why my Backtraxx Vol. 1 set has only 5 discs when others seem to have gotten 29 or 30.
Oh well, it was still worth the money.
