Finally, after reading through all the forums for tips and by the way, thanks to all who helped, I am the now the owner of a brand new TC Electronics Konnekt 6. It was an opened box deal... brand new and for only $147 delivered.

Next up............ perhaps a 286a or if the preamps in the Konnekt are good enough, I'll skip the 286a and put the money towards an upgraded mic. I'm still debating on whether to get a mixer. I'm thinking about a Mackie VLZ3 series (402, 802, 1202). XDR2 mic pres seem to have a good reputation. Anyone have opinions on their preamps?

There's a boatload about pre's in here!! For the record, I love my 286, but it's noisier than my Symetrix 528 (not E) which I love with a never-ending love because of how it makes my RE20 sound like the best mic in the universe.

Good purchase!

I've used a Konnekt 6 for two years. It never fails. The preamp is excellent. As good as you can get for less than $500. Why would you need a mixer? The 6 is a mixer in a way. Headphone amp can be used for headphones or feeding a phone patch. Big volume knob for monitors.

That's great news and it contains real bits of panther.... so you know it's good. Now, I do have my eye on a 528e that can be had for $375 delivered (used)........ hmmmmm.......

Look in the Gear section. One of our members is selling a Mackie VLZ3 mixer at a good price.

Thanks Jeffrey for that plug. It is certainly a great price on a 1402 vlz3. I wonder if maybe I am pricing it too low? Maybe people think there is something wrong with it.

The Konnekt 6 is a nice piece but will allow only one mic at a time. It does have 2 instrument plugs in the back. If you want to connect another mic or maybe ISDN or something how would that work on the 6? Just curious..I can't see how you could use it as a mixer. Headphone and monitor control and preamp I can see.
Not doubting here,,,just wondering.

This would be my first chain so I'll defer the ISDN query to Bill.

It seems it's an either/or situation. Either headphones or ISDN but not both at the same time.

Regarding your mixer, It's certainly a good price, it's just a matter of where do I put the remainder of my cash..... towards a mixer or a processor? Both have preamps that I can use as a second option to the Konnekt. One offers the flexibility while the other offers some nice processing qualities.........

I have about $400 bucks left in my budget and I'd still like to get a second mic. My first mic, which I just ordered about 4 minutes ago will be the Harlan Hogan VO 1a. I can't ignore the positive feedback coupled with the "send it back if you don't like it" promise.... in spite of the suspiciously low price point. Seems like a win/win!

Seems I have some thinkin' ta do..........

Yeah, if you are going to use ISDN, get an inexpensive mixer.
