I would invest in some room treatment. Not furalex...some good absorbers maybe.

I should explain... if you read the other thread, you may get the impression that I actually have an idea as to what I need so I thought I'd better start fresh so as to make it clear that I in fact, haven't a clue as to what I need.

My appologies, I guess I could have simply re-stated the question in the previous post.

Gp, regarding room treatments, I have a separate budget for that which should suffice.

A professional to teach you how to really use it all and make the most of your remaining budget and effectively treat the room acoustics.

Luckily for me, I have a chum who owns an audio production company and has already offered to lend me a hand with that. I will also be looking at some voice coaching as well. I've had some (early 90's) but not close to enough.

I've heard M-Audio BX5A and Alesis M1 MkII as a couple of reasonably priced models to look at. Any recommendations?

Used this company for my studio and it rocks, uhh it's dead quiet...just a happy customer, not a spokesperson.

Yes, and if I'm not mistaken, I read some posts on the topic and George recommends this company as well.

Absolutely no question. Spend it on the room. No contest.

After seeing how easy and inexpensive it was to build the panels for my booth I wouldn't rule out the DIY option either. For giggles I'll price out my cost per square foot on the insul shield panels and post it later so you can compare.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have some interesting plans for the room which I built in my garage (double 5/8" both in and out/steel stud construction)... 11'x7' with a mechanical room/rackmount rear access room at about 2'x3' in one corner. My only issue is where I placed the door. Hindsight would have me put it along my long wall rather than my short wall... Oh well, gotta play the hand.

I actually wouldn't mind some feedback on the plans I have to get everone's thoughts. Since I lacked the room for my orignal plan which was to build a booth within the control room, I will have to use this room as both my booth and control room. I thought I would hang eye-hooks in pairs that would hold up large 2'x4' homemade absorbers... picture this but instead of carpet, I would wrap some 2" rockwool in burlap and secure it between the hangers. The end effect would have me surrounded by these makeshift walls that are hung using these hooks and then removed when not recording and hung along the wall in the early reflections spots. Essentially, they'd be designed and used as 2'x4' or 4'x4' wall treatments but can easily be taken and repositioned in a formation to create a small "booth" in the corner or even right around my desk area so I'm still in front of my CPU.

I hope I'm explaining this clearly, and please be honest if you think it's a rather useless idea. I'm just a little nervous about not having a voice booth and thought this would suffice (or maybe it's overkill and all I need is the Harlan Hogan Porta-booth or The Mic Thing.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have to disagree with GP. I just bought the furalex and it was a great investment. Go with one of their project packages that suits your studio.
