|
|
Hello All,
For some time now I have had a scam-alert section in my website. Only a handful of people have stepped up to help spread the word on some of the scammers that have plagued the industry in the past few years.
Very recently an innocent bystander who had accidentally named their company with a name similar to one of the biggest and most notorious voiceover casting scammers in the market today, had suffered from a backlash because of the similar naming.
Here is a link to a post I wrote clarifying the issue and giving suggestions on what we can do to stop the Scammers from ripping us and our brethren off:
http://www.voiceemporium.com/archives/03/innocent-bystanders/
Please read the post... this knowledge could help you and possibly your friends to avoid getting scammed by this scum. _________________ Mahmoud Taji

Speaking of scams, Taj. Paul writes about this one in your scam blog as well. The email below greeted me this morning:
"Greetings
I am Mr George Maxwell from the UK I would like to book for 4 weeks voice over training classes for 3 hours each day,as the case may be, Monday through Saturday (morning hours or evening hours) for a group of 8 adults,We would be coming over to your location, and as part of our plans we intend to visit your facility and have classes/private lessons in that space of time, can you send us your offers for the classes? Do you have guest rooms or is there any 3 star hotel close to your studio?
DATE: 5th July TO 2nd Aug 2010
. I would love to get the total cost or a quote/estimate. Do you accept credit cards?you are required to get back to me ASAP
Regards
George"
It's inspired me to think about creating a VO Bed & Breakfast/Dude Ranch. Enjory the splendor of brown sage grass, brown dust and more brown trees along the Red River Valley of North Texas while perfecting your voice over and narration skills. Learn how to voice in temperatures exceeding 105 degrees, along with the art of hacking up orange dust blown in from Lubbock between takes. Take in all the rich history and beauty that Texhoma has to offer. Okay, that last line needs some work, 'cause after more than five years, I'm still looking for the rich history and beauty.
I donno. If I buld it, will they come? _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

We can create a whole new industry called voiceover travel tours and take people on tours to the facilities of MXL, Sennheiser and the chinese factories where they make Neumann Replicas. _________________ Mahmoud Taji

couldn't we just do slide shows? that would be cheaper and we could move people through drew's b&b quicker.

Plus, I could show 'em my box of dead, Chinese pre and mic tubes. And we'd have steer and pony rides! At night, in the glow of a mesquite fire we could do armadillo rasslin'! Man! I am so stoked with inspiration I'm wearin' my pointers and just my boxers with my ten gallon hat. I'm either ready to make sacks of cash or go to church. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

[inadvertent thread jack]
They let you wear boxers in that church o' yorn? Why, in my day, all the menfolks had to wear tighty whities to church. O' course, we were short of sopranos in the choir, which might explain THAT rule...

I got that one too... I found it particularly odd as I do not offer any training at all. Besides the fact that I am in Taiwan!! Now I'm upset...I was thinking about billing him for the training and accommodation before disclosing that airfare here is not included.
Did anybody get one from Cosmic Global Limited? It looks legit, but I distrust anything coming from a "global" company that uses gmail...(Although it is common here for some bizarre reason) _________________ Mandarin Chinese Voiceovers & Localization

This one is the latest in a long string of similar scam emails I've received. Up until recently they've all revolved around someone ("The Agent") expressing interest in his "International Musical Group" recording an album in my studio for a multiple week booking. Hilarious image...say, 6 percussionists gathered in my 8'x10' room. Evidently they've modified the business plan to draw in the voiceover crowd.
