An on-camera acquaintance of mine who wants to do some voiceoverising asked my opinion, and not being a gear junkie like so many of y'all, I had to admit I didn't have the answer.
What mic would you recommend to a commercial actress, mid-to-high range late-30's voice who doesn't want to spend more than a few hundred bucks, but wants to sound like she spent more? She is apparently inheriting a Whisper Room somehow, so I'm guessing she'll have a very quiet, but not very live space.
Thoughts? Or is the best advice to wait on picking up a mic until she can afford something pricier? _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I just got rid of a Sterling ST51 when I bought my RE 20, but it was a great mic for the cash. The next step up would be the Sterling ST55 for 199.00 If you add in the shockmount for 29.99, you'd still be under 300.00. You can spend 60 bucks on a good mic cable and still be under budget.
Sterling is getting great reviews for budget mics, and I've personally used one, so I have no problems recommending them.

Ditto on the Studio Projects C-1. Your friend should take a list of the mics recommended here and go try them out at a place like Guitar Center. That's one of the suggestions I got here when I was first starting out which wasn't that long ago. |

Maybe I should try a C1.
Would you pick the C1 over a Rode NT2-A or an AKG Perception 200? _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I would. I'll let you try my C1. Though my C1 is the older version and has a different voicing than the new model. Mine is a little bright.
Call me in the AM and I'll run it over to you, and watch the Flying Circus. _________________ The Blog:

Ooo! That sounds like fun, Mike! I'm swamped this weekend, though. (10 guests for dinner tonight. I've been cooking and cleaning for days!.) Email me to let me know when you're passing through! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

New model C1 is great for VO, but I've got the even newer generation CS5 (the multi pattern version of the CS1). The CS1 is $249, and the thing is schweeeet and not bright at all. One of the few Chinese mics that really does sound like a U87...a vintage U87, not the newer U87ai.
Studio Projects are FWT for cheap VO mics now, and lots of affordable MXL and AKG mics work great too. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Yep, sure does. Good luck beating it for the price. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
