I'm fairly comfortable with French pronunciations generally, but I'm passing this info along to someone else and I'd like some opinions from others who may know for certain. How would you relay a pronunciation for the following?

La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein

Would you go with Grahnd or Grand? Is Dutchess equal emphasis on both syllables or is it DUTCH-ess? Gerolstein with a French "J" or a harder "J"? Is it steen or stine?

Thanks!

La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein

Short a for Grande
Equal stress for Duchesse, but lengthen the sse a touch
Gerolstein - German: hard G - Geh-ROLL-schtine (not steen). It's a soft, breathy R, also. Half way between an R and an H.

In German, EI/IE usually takes whichever vowel is last.

Thanks. Once I get to work I may get a definitive answer, but I wanted some idea early this am (and I didn't want to bother Liz if I didn't have to Smile )

-a little update for those interested-

The venue presenting the performance gave us the French pronunciation of JER-ol-stine, so that's what we're going with . I'm sure we'll find out if it's wrong.
