First of all, I must state that I haven't been too visible here or much of anywhere this year because I have been swamped with work and other major personal and life issues. I won't brag or complain. It just is what it is. I hate looking helpless and asking for help, But here I am, with folks I respect and trust, asking for help.

I've tried the Digi users forum, even paid for a Digi support tech to assist. Even they can't figure it out even after setting up a Pro Tools profile on my new machine.
Backstory: My 3 1/3 year-old laptop screen died and I decided to get a new better laptop w/ 500 G RAM, 4G SDRAM, Win XP Pro so I could continue running ProTools LE 7.0 with MBOX(1).

I installed software perfectly on new machine, it launches, and it has a strong mic signal, but WILL NOT PLAY OR RECORD without getting these errors (in subject line)
Well I am ready to toss this system out in the street. I am feeling hopeless, and I have a ton of work to get done. I am leaving town for a week with my new laptop and did I say I was stressed out to the max?. Actually was crying my eyes out yesterday in frustration.

So I am pretty decided I need to make a change. I am aware of many folks opinions of ProTools here. I am not looking for bashing PT, unless you have a fix for the errors. I need SOLUTIONS!
What I am looking for is either a fix for my PT issues, or a recommendation on audio recording software that has some multi-track capability, requires no additional hardware and is simple, and HASSLE-FREE.

Thank you everyone who can either reply here or pm me. I'm kinda desperate.

Bobbin,

Do you by any chance have Internet Explorer 8 installed on that new laptop? I ran into all kinds of similar trouble with ProTools on my laptop after I said "yes" to that security update. I had to roll back to IE 7 to get things working again.

the issue with Internet Explorer 8 is well documented on the Digi site..

the update to PT LE 8, or 8.0.3, supposedly has the IE 8 fix.

you cannot roll back to IE 7 unless you un-install the Service Pack 3 update to Win Xp...and if it's a new laptop pre-loaded with a fresh copy of XP, it most certainly probably has Service Pack 3 installed.

I'm surprised a Digi Tech wouldn't brought this up because this is a well known problem with PT LE and Win Xp.

No.
I have a Dell, built by a guy that works with PT and it has IE 6! Win XP Pro. I knew about IE 8 and so did he. So I'm figuring it's gotta be a simple fix somewhere. I've been through the error message issue with the old computer but disabled one of the core duo processors in the system bios, but can't recall how I did it, and Dell and Digi told me this step is unnecessary. I've googled the errors also, and a LOT of folks have the same problem. I'm swiftly gaining the mindset that Pro Tools was designed to so specific and tempermental it's making me mental!.

As a quick fix I've downloaded Audacity to tide me over while I am out of town for a week so I can do auditions while I have this new laptop with me. But when I return I have a boatload of e learning courses I've been doing in ProTools and need to finish.

I'm telling you that I'll award a gold medal to anyone who can figure this out. I'll also be investigating other recording software. Which is why I've asked what others are using. Thanks to all and anyone who can save me from a straitjacket.

I don't know if this will help, but I found this on the Sweetwater site:

This problem usually occurs with -9129, -9093, -9094, -6086, or similar DAE error numbers or messages about CPU resources**. One known solution in Windows XP is to update your IDE/ATA controllers. Here's how:

1. Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage."
2. In the left-hand column, select the Device Manager." Click on the "+" next to "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers." You should see three types: Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel, and a third type. There will be three type entries for each internal mounted hard drive.
3. If this third type is "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller," your errors are due to something else. If the third type is anything else, right-click on it and select "Update Driver..."
4. If Windows wants to connect automatically, choose "No, not this time."
5. When you get to the Hardware Update Wizard, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)." Click "Next."
6. Choose "Don't search. I will..." and click "Next."
7. Highlight the "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" and click "Next" then "Finish" then "Yes." Your computer will now restart, and Pro Tools should stop giving you these errors. If they still persist, try another solution in our Knowledgebase or contact our Tech Support department by phone or email.

Try Reaper or Audition.
I find Reaper highly intuitive and incredibly powerful for the price of admission.
I don't think you'll be disappointed, download the demo and give it a whirl.
Say bye bye to Pro Tools headaches. Forever.

You poor thing. I really feel for you. I know what it feels like to be that frustrated.

Another vote for Adobe Audition. I just upgraded to 3.0 after using 1.5 for years, and I just love it. Multi-track, easy to use, does everything you'd ever want it to do and more. And I've never needed a class or tech support or anything. If I were you, I'd just cut my Pro Tools losses and go with Audition!

I hope this all resolves happily for you, one way or another, very soon!

Jeez, George. I just took a look at that Reaper site and thought "Wow, they seem to have thought of everything". Then I figured it must be for Windows only. Imagine my surprise when I saw:

Operating Systems

* Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7
* OSX 10.4/10.5/10.6
* Linux/WINE
* Windows 98/ME (limited)

As a Mac guy, I was shocked. I'm quite happy with Sound Studio and Cubase LE for my needs, but I may have to check out Reaper, if only out of curiosity. Thanks.

I just took a look at Reaper as well (OS X version), and agree that at first glance it looks pretty good. Fairly intuitive and the low pricing for an individual license puts it pretty much in the area of "why not?" But... unless I'm being a little dumb this morning it has no internal wave editor, and calls for a specified external editor when a recorded file is selected for manipulation.

With this caveat, it's still looks like a pretty good option... but it does nothing for my particular workflow (I record into Sound Studio 3 where I do the basic editing and then transfer into Soundtrack Pro if anything more is needed). It looks like it may give Soundtrack Pro or PT a run for its money for most VO applications... (on the understanding that most people consider these things like PT or Audition a little overpowered for basic work). This may be good news for a number of Mac people who have bemoaned the fact that Soundtrack Pro is no longer available as an individual purchase and is only available in the Final Cut suite. The free 30 day evaluation should settle any questions about whether it's suitable or not.

Cheers
Peter

Oh Bobbin- I truly feel your pain and wish I had a solution for the issue!

I loved Audition when I worked with it, I may go back to it at some point.

Another software is Twisted Wave. I haven't worked with it much, but it seems intuitive and it's very cheap. Beau Weaver uses this in his studio and has always had very positive things to say about it.

Good luck...and don't feel bad, I've cried over Pro Tools too...

Another vote for Adobe Audition 3.0. Also Like Sony Vegas Movie Studio+DVD Platinum Edition for sound AND video.

THANK you all for your kindness and support and excellent information. I'm still out of town working on getting my lake home ready for the summer rental season and have been too busy to deal with PT. I've been using Audacity and Goldwave a bit for some auditions, and I hear audible clicks that also appear as a little blip in the wav file at each edit point. Someone told me I should clear my Windows system casche,.

Anyone know Anything known about this?

But I willl check into Audition and Reaper. As far as I know Twisted Wave is a Mac only, right?

I am feeling much better, now by the way. Sometimes it takes getting completely away from a situation to gain a better perspective.

This board ROCKS!

You are not alone.

Another vote for Audition. Left Pro Tools long ago and never looked back.

I got rid of Pro Tools a while ago. I, too, got tired of the headaches. I'm a fan of Adobe Audition for PC and Twisted Wave for Mac. Beau Weaver turned me on to the program in one of his VU postings. Of course with Twisted Wave you can't do multi-track recording/editing. 98% of what I produce anyway is a mono-wave voice file, unprocessed. It's so easy to use it's crazy--not to mention cheap ($79.80). I do have access to Adobe Audition when the need arises, but it's rare.

I'm not sure who said it, but for VO peeps Pro Tools is like taking a 737 jetliner to the corner store for a quart of milk. There are so many bells and whistles you will probably never ever use.

Good luck, Bobbin. You're such a sweet professional lady that doesn't need that kind of aggravation.
