I may have spoken about this before, but outside of my obsession with pizza and soda (and sometimes flan,) I love love love homemade pancakes and real Vermont Maple syrup (should Maple be capitalized? If not, it *should* be.)
Growing up in the headstone business, some of the best granite in the world came out of Barre, VT. My parents would take trips up there to source/buy rock and establish/maintain relationships with the quarries or those that pulled those big blocks from them. The best part? They always returned with some fresh Maple syrup.
It's been a while, but the other day I bought some and man oh man - sorry Aunt Jemima, but your high-fructose 10W-40 concoction doesn't come close to the real deal.
Pancakes anyone?

Mmmmmmm. Ever go to a maple sugar house and eat the syrup right off the snow? If not, it's something completely worth doing with your kids one day. They set up tables of snow and pour the sugar on it in strips. BLISS. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

I hope Vermont had a better sugaring season than we did in western Mass. It got warm too quickly, and stayed warm at night, during the critical time, so the sap didn't flow properly. I think they said production was down about 80% this year.
Good thing we're very fond of home made wild blueberry sauce on our pancakes, too. |

Blueberries are not a bad alternative at all. DB graciously sent me some (can't remember the occassion or if that's just DB for ya.) and I kept them *all* to myself. Muahahahaha!

I have one lonely maple tree but I usually tap it and boil down my own syrup in the kitchen. I'm lucky if I get a half gallon a year. I didn't bother this year, but I still haven't used up last year's supply. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

last spring i helped a former boss, now pd at the point-fm in montpelier,v t. he DID ask if i could do him a favor. i DID reply saying i'd like trade. please, sir, one gallon of grade b--the dark, rich stuff that is, in maple syrup parlance, lower grade than a (pshaw!). we're almost licking the bottom (actually decanted into a pellegrino bottle--high class here) and so, i am getting in the mood to help a brother out again this year . yummers! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. With you Anthony! Friends have a maple farm nearby and they keep us stocked up. My wife doesn't like it, but we tried a sample at a different farm while on a tour recently and she liked that. I tried it and basically it had very maple flavor. Kind of like corn syrup. So it's interesting how it varies depending on location and time of year. We've all converted to the stuff just because there's no point in consuming corn syrup and food dyes when you can get something better direct from nature herself. _________________ Joe Szymanski

There's a Sugar Shack a couple of miles from our house in Upstate NY, and that's the only place we get our Maple Syrup. It's a small local outfit run by a couple who lives "out back" behind the...."plant" They've been there for about 10 years and their syrup is really good! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

The lovely, refined taste of a classy Class A syrup is quite nice sometimes, but most pancake days only that meaty-beaty-big-and-bouncy Class B maple crude will do. Can't imagine ever eating that artificial goo again.

I must be deprived, because I've only had the store-bought stuff on pancakes. Probably no wonder I prefer donuts. _________________ Jeff

I love donuts, too, Jeffrey. Hmmm... there's an idea - pure maple syrup over a donut. Thanks!

I love real maple syrup on home-made pumpkin pancakes. Even though I don't make my own syrup, I grow my own pie pumpkins each year, roast , mash, and use freeze and use as desired. HEAVEN! _________________ Bobbin Beam
