My Sony Vegas 5.0 software is all of the sudden clipping out small pieces of audio, BURPING, if you will.

Has anyone had this problem before and might know of a remedy?

Do you have an external hard drive? Have you added software lately to your recording machine? Have you considered upgrading to 9.0? How much space do you have left on your recording hard drive?

Hi Frank.

Yes, I do have an external hard drive...it was 75% full but I've purged a few things and now it's less than 50% full.

My recording hard drive has 87% free space at the moment...and no, I hadn't thought about upgrading to Sony Vegas 9.0...til now.

Any suggestions to get rid of the audio drop outs Frank?

Well, now I have the information necessary (or at least some) and remembering how this situation occurred in Vegas 5, there are two things you can do at thsi point.

One: upgrade.

Two: When you begin a session in Vegas, reset the bit rate (44,1 or 48 Khz), hit O.K. to save the setting. Close out of Vegas, then re-start Vegas.

The problem surfaced in Vegas 5 and after several days of problems and no answers from Sony Support I found the workaround. When I presented the solution to the Sony crew they immediately went to work and created an upgrade for Version 5. Subsequently, Version 6 arrived and the "fix" was included.

Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions Frank.

I tried 'the fix' for Vegas 5 but unfortunately that didn't work for me. Then I re-loaded Vegas 5...but still, the burping continues.

Looks like it's time for an upgrade next week...I'll let you know how that goes, cheers!

Have you added any external devices that use the same buss as your external hard drive? USB/Firewire?

Have you recently upgraded your OS?

My favorite Vegas for audio is 6. Using 8 for video and 9 is on
the desk for install.

The last version of Vegas 5 is 5.0d do you have that version?

Vegas 6 is the primo edition for audio. Sony changed the audio engine and things got better - for a while. Vegas 7 went back to the old engine and forced the video into a sloppy next generation. Nine is nice, but the interface looks tacky.

Soundguy has it right, keep 'em all.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for your suggestions Frank and Soundguy.

I am looking at upgrading to Vegas 6 if I can't get rid of the burps on Vegas 5.

Soundguy, just so you know, my hard drive crashed about 10 days ago and I had a new one re-installed...but that's when the burping problem began.

You also mentioned the external hard drive...if I clear out more space on it(it's about 50% full right now) might that help clear up the burping?

Cleaning off the internal hard drive is always a good idea. However, cleaning the HD will not alone resolve the problem you are experiencing.

The drive you were using was most likely a 7200 RPM drive which would have made it "usable" until it became more than 60% full. I would venture a guess either you have installed a lower speed drive or you have added another item in the chain (CD/DVD, etc.). The bus speed is dependent upon the lowest speed item in the chain.

Using the Sony Vegas on your internal drive AND recording to the internal drive takes resources. This will cause the "hiccups". The internal drive alone is not able to handle the amount of data being input and output.

Utilizing an external drive (allocated specifically for holding the data - recording and editing data) as the Vegas "Temp" file allows the internal drive to work optimally for the program parameters; and the external drive to work on recording the information.

I short buy a small external drive (250 - 320 Gcool to hold the Vegas Temp file and your issues might be a thing of the past.

Good luck,

Frank F
