Dry or Juicy?

All-Dry was "all the rage" in LA recently.

I queried my favorite audio and dialog directors and here's what they said:

Quote:
Depends on what it is - in general I'm very pro "context" in game audio.  A sound out of context might sound fine, but it's how it works with everything else going on that makes it not only good, but appropriate.

Quote:
I think I'd rather hear both.  Smile
For me, it really depends on what we are looking for, but I like hearing the different contexts.

Quote:
(From Germany): For demo purposes it's great to have it all played at once to give me an overall feel of your performance and how it sounds within a world. Although 2 versions would be nice; one sequence with your voice alone and one with its surroundings!

Quote:
For a demo: A variety of mixed ambiance is kind of cool to hear (like it might have been pulled from a game).

Quote:
Dry....the listener will get what you're doing.  Or you can get fancy, and maybe the audience will think it's part of a real game.  If it's THEIR game, and you're not the one they think it is, they could get cranky.  Up to you...it's just splitting hairs.

Quote:
I don't mind them either way. For a while, I enjoyed them dry as hell... because most people just don't know how to blend fx without overdoing it (kind of like someone trying their hand at cooking) But I have learned to enjoy it anyway. Similar to my fiance's cooking. It just works after eating it over and over..

I have to thank Bob Bergen for spurring this line of inquiry.

That last one is a hoot. Wonder what the fiance would say about that?

Contempt turns to love in the kitchen.

Over easy.

To please everyone is job in itself. My thoughts are to give it both ways in one slightly demo. I have said, "when producing a demo (of any kind) here should be at least one or two dry reads of different styles" included.

With specialty demos, such as for game voices or character voices, it might be a 50/50 blend creatively mixed together to make the perfect omelette.

Great information, from the horses mouths, so to speak. Thank you for the post D.B.
