Hi all,
I put my home studio back together last night. Everything I've connected seems to be in the right place, but when I step in front of the mic, it sounds like I'm 10 feet away even though I'm right up to it!
HELP!
Thanks,
Tom |

Tom,
I know this might seem a bit insulting, but it's not meant to be (I've made this mistake myself)...
Check the direction of your microphone. If you're using a condenser mic, the capsule has a live side and a dead side, make sure the live side is facing you and not the wall. You can usually tell which side is which because the manufacturer emblem is usually on the live side.
The other possibility could be the gain on your input device, depending on what you connect your mic to (mixer, outboard sound card etc...) it can be very easy to knock the gain down to next to nothing.
Just two things that pop to mind quickly for me. _________________ Brian Forrester Voice Overs

That's what I thought of, too— especially since I have done this exact thing. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

If you speak into the wrong side of some of my least favorite mics they actually sound better. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

(I made that mistake once! I was setting up my mobile rig in a rush, having just dashed like a maniac into my mom's guest room. My son responds to my cry for help and says "Hmmm. Let's try this." ) _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I've done that!
Also- some mics can get moisture in them, causing this to happen. Place the mic in it's pelican case with one of those silica gel packets that come in medicine bottles (I think that's what they are). Do this for an hour to absorb any extra moisture, then plug in and try again. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Also, if you're on a laptop, check that your computer is really recording through the mic and not through the laptop's built-in mic. I've had that happen a few times after disconnecting/reconnecting. _________________ Bob Ransom

I'm pretty sure that's what's happening. I'm trying to patch it into my desktop though. |
