I keep initiating these "versus" threads. So...with reference to the subject does VO even have a place for part time people? I have immense respect for the professional career people I have chatted with on this forum and I have listened over and over to many of the posted demos. The people I refer to make a career out of VO and clearly are actors. I'm working at it. I want to regain some of what I once had in the old broadcasting days if only for my own satisfaction. As I continue toward a demo of some sort I have to say I am not doing this for the money. Hard work aside this is fun to me and as experts and professionals I want to know if there is room for part time guys like me. I'll let it take me where it will. I trust this forum to get some good advice.

The best way to tackle Voice Over work is to blunder around like an amateur and let the industry decide if you're a pro, full-time, part-time or no time.

Steve,

I did professional voiceover work part-time for 26 years. I only left my corporate job to do nothing but voiceover work in May 2009. Plug away until you get where you want to get or die trying.

Great advice Bob. I love your work BTW and I heard a bit of a conversation you had with Kristine Oller about your customer service ethic.

Whether you want to be part or full time you still need to study, have a great demo, do your marketing and continue to learn and see where it takes you. It's important to enjoy the process.

I did part time VO for 10 years, until the Fall of 2007 and have now been full time since then.

It takes time and the willingness to have some lean times is a must. Two things really made a difference for me:

1) Accepting rejection without taking it personally, then moving on to the next opportunity.

2) Some really great VO professionals lending advice and their time to point me in the right direction. John Weeks, Melba Sebriel & Maxine Dunn are some of those great people.

I can't imagine doing anything else. And it's still a work in progress for me.

I've dealt with a tons of rejection over the years. Talent is in the ear of the beholder in this case. No, this process is fun for me. Regardless of the outcome (I may never get a job) this is a learning experience I'm stoked about (then again I may get a job). I'm highly self critical so letting critique my reads will become even more essential. Scott Shurian has an excellent workshop I am in right now. Talk about a professional willing to share. I haven't this much fun learning since...well...EVER.
