As for direction, we here often talk about "giving the director what they want" - in the case of celebrity VOs they are directed sparingly if at all compared to us working class voiceoverist folks. I've recorded a few a-list people and I've edited the sessions from a few of the a-list VO/actors and the direction intensity just isn't there. The talents are hired for their personality, and nobody is going to try and get in the way of that. The directors are more like ADs making sure nobody screws up the session.

These people are actors and are used to working with directors. It's my guess that, in many cases, the person who would be directing one of us mere mortal voiceoverists is afraid to do the same with a hot shot movie star. It's also my guess that these celebrity actors would prefer to receive more direction than some of these directors are giving them.

I think the Hyundai campaign with Bridges is strong because...
a) they are well written
b) there's white space
c) Jeff sounds real
d) he sounds very American, good way to sell Korean cars to Americans.

Hyundai has been extremely successful selling cars in the US the last two years, even in the economic downturn.

We've worked with well-known actors and except for one, they all thanked us for the direction we gave. Even the most famous one... he pointed out to us that as actors, they expect direction.

The only exception was one who was difficult to deal with, and yes, a big name, and felt that he knew better what the script writer (me) had in mind. Since I wasn't there, I guess he must have used the force to read my mind or something.

This whole Hyundai/Jeff Bridges thing as stirred up some interesting observations. I did not see what a lot of you saw or I didn't interpret the same way. I'm going to go back, look at it and see what I missed.

Tess, you are a welcome voice on this board -- glad you're here! And thank you for posting that link. It's not one I'd seen. Here's another, with really pedestrian copy:

He nails
every
syllable.

IMHO it is The Perfect Read.

Hi, Donna ~ Thank you for the warm welcome! Smile

The Hyundai spot you posted was one I hadn't seen before - and I agree: perfect

What's interesting about that spot compared to quite a few others for Hyundai, is that in the spot you posted - there's a brighter quality to his voice, there's a bit of cheer which goes well with the message in the copy.

He has amazing restraint ~

(something I need to learn)

The Dude abides....

OK OK so it's the restraint that's impressive? I need to learn that myself. I suppose I confuse restraint with "too relaxed" or "don't care". That's just me showing my ignorance. Now I have yet another way to give words life. My ear becomes better trained every minute. Smile

NO! Not "ignorance" no, no, no. Learning these subtle differences is part of a new skill set. In radio, we had been taught/trained to do things in a very different way.

No one with a mind that is open to learning, and open to looking at things a new way could ever be ignorant.

Sorry for the strong reaction, I'm just very "anti" negative language. oh, wait....

Ah Ha...you took my use of the word "ignorance" as a negative. Had I been voicing that statement it would never have come across negatively. The word ignorance to me means to ignore the obvious. It was a sarcastic use of the word. I was making fun of myself more than anything. I take the "scolding" to heart and will be much more positive in the future. Embarrassed Wink BTW Tess...great demo.

Here a "director" displays his ignorance with Shatner (from the Howard Stern Show).

Glad you're not being hard on yourself, Azkope ~ and thanks for the kind words Smile

omg, Mike - that made me SO HAPPY!! Hahaha!! I hadn't heard that one before - loved it. Why would you hire William Shatner and then try to un-Shatner him?
