This thread prompted some research on my part. There are several possibilities out there, so in the interest of trying something different, I'm in the process of doing an initial backup with Backblaze. Supposedly, my initial backup will take 32 days but the trial is only for 15...so maybe I'll try a test restore before the trial is up and decide. Nice to have all these options. |

|
|
Greetings all,
I've been using Mozy.com online backup (similar to Carbonite) ever since they began advertising (and before Carbonite got big). I'm using their 2GB freebie service (one account per computer) and have had to utilize their "restore" feature more than once on various PCs. What a snap. Thanks, Mozy! I believe their "unlimited" amount is still $5/month.
Another thought... For those who have a Google account, Google Documents now allows you to upload and store ANY type of file (including audio). It's not a backup service, it's a "cloud storage", but hey...
They give you something like 7GB for free. I went ahead and forked over $5 (annual fee) for an additional 20 Gigabytes of storage. Not a bad deal.
In any event, most experts recommend that we BACK UP the important stuff to at least two places outside the home.

I have been procrastinating (something I'm really good at) but this thread has reminded me it's about time I made the Carbonite Maneuver. Now, excuse me while I pour myself a glass of tranya. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I've been playing Russian roulette with my files. I've got to get something-
Okay here's my 'Rainman' tech knowledge level question - I do want to get some kind of external additional storage for pictures and audio- so I can access them easily as needed- but also clear a huge hunk of space off my Mac book. Or can that same thing be accomplished with Carbonite? _________________ Moe Egan

Moe,
It could, but I think for that kind of thing an external hard drive would be the better choice. Maybe two. They're pretty cheap these days. _________________ Be well,

Moe...do both. Pick up an external drive. Like Bob says they are cheap. Then get some kind of off site storage like Carbonite. You can sleep worry free then. _________________ "I'm thinking...and it hurts" |

Yep. Go with the external hard drive and then back 'em both up on Carbonite! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

My #1 son the Mac Tech says Carbonite is iffy with full restores.
Has anyone here had to do a total restore from an online backup? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

#1: Run an external HD AND a service like Carbonite
#2: Good luck with the 'free' services and only 7gb or so. I have around 150gb of storage on my computers and it's pretty much all backed up on Carbonite.
#3: Deidre: I've had to do full restores several times and Carbonite CAN miss a file or two, but it's never been anything critical. It might have been because I had SO much data to pull back. I dunno..... But going on 3+ years with them now, I'm quite happy with them, and the ongoing backup is transparent, constant, and fast. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Well, I did something similar to a full restore in that I ditched my old machine because it was starting to act unpredictably and then recreated things just the way they were on my new machine...
I had to install all the applications, but all of my data is here good as new. What kinds of "iffy" is the kid reporting? _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

Amy, what I experienced with my restores from Carbonite would be an occasional corrupted file. Not often, and nothing major, but obviously if a substantial file was corrupted it would be a problem. I have also experienced total restores from Carbonite with NO problems, too. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Thanks, Scott. I've had that happen with back-ups to external media, too. I'm wondering if that can happen sometimes, no matter what you do. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I sporadically back selected files up with an external drive. "Cloud" storage makes me a bit...nervous. Perhaps I've seen a few too many episodes of the X-Files, but having my data--personal and otherwise--sitting on a machine that lives in someone else's office, or basement, or whatever, gives me a screaming case of the paranoids. _________________ ab
