The voice of the Yankees - you will be missed:

He was just as part of going to the stadium as the popcorn, beer, and overpriced fountain soda.

99 years old and until recently, was not only the voice of Yankee Stadium, he was also the voice of the football NY Giants.
Derek Jeter is the only Yankee who has an audio recording of Bob Sheppard who still introduces him at home games.
And he taught speech at St. John's University.
Rest In Peace Bob Sheppard

That's right, Patrick - You can go to the new Yankees Stadium and still hear him introduce Derek Jeter. Pretty cool. |

The most awesome thing about Mr. Sheppard's life, in my view, is that he did Yankee games for 56 years. 56 years! Think about that. And he lived to 99! He began with Dimaggio, and continued through the Mantle and Jackson eras, right up to Jeter. God bless him... a long life, doing what he loved. We should all be that lucky.

Wisdom from Bob Sheppard, who was originally a professor of Speech at Saint John's University in Queens, NY.
Paraphrasing: I approach this job as a speech professional. I don't shout, I don't yell and I don't root.
He maintained dignity at a time when PA guys in sports are pushing and screaming (worst in the NBA).
Long after the spectators at the game stopped wearing suits and ties and dresses and hats, he always said "Ladies and Gentlemen" with each announcement.
"Most people go to work," he said. "I go to a game!"
He lived by the three "C's"
Clear, concise and correct. _________________ http://MichaelSchoen.com |

A class act.
And during tomorrow's All Star Game, as a tribute, his voice will be introducing Derek Jeter
He was also called the "Voice of God" by Reggie Jackson.
