Hi VO-BBers!

I am completely new here, so let me introduce myself. My name is Nikki and I'm someone who has been working hard to indoctrinate herself into the voice over world.

I feel like I know you all, or at least most of you, already because of the countless hours I've spent pouring through the posts on this board. All of which have been amazingly helpful and have helped me plot a course in my own career. So many thanks!

A little about me: I am full-time in the corporate world in technology sales. I make my living on the phone and I admit, I've taken pride in my voice and the compliments I've received. But, I don't know how much of a 'natural' I am as I do have the benefit of formal training. I used to do professional improv that mixed drama and comedy (that was a fun job when you're in school) and I took debate for many years, did One Act plays, and I've had training on presentation skills that coupled with all my business training I feel fortunate to have been given.

I think a career in voice over is perfect for me and the fact that everything I've read keeps saying so much about treating yourself and your voice over work like running your own business sounds like what I've been looking for. So far, I'm most interested in audiobooks, though sometimes I listen to my voice and I seem to fall into 'commercial' from what I've studied. But I am also interested in doing IVR. We'll see as I learn and gain knowledge and figure out the niche that best suits me.

So again, I have to say thank you for this board and I'm sure I'll have several questions as I get deeper into things here. But so far? Everything I've come up with, question wise, you guys have already answered (in your old threads) so thank you!

Nikki

Nikki,

Welcome to the VO-BB. Life in voiceover is much better than working for a living, but then, I grew up on a farm. Anything is better than loading the manure spreader.

Thanks, Bob!

I have to say I've really enjoyed your posts, especially outlining your business and VO experiences. And I fully agree. Smile

Hey, Nikki...

Welcome and good luck as you plunge into vo-dom.

Looking forward to hearing a few demos when you get them together.

Regards..

Thanks for the lovely welcome, all.

And be expecting those demos after I get the mic I've decided on. I'd be curious on feedback as to what you feel my voice is suited for or toward.

Hi Nikki, thanks for the introduction. Welcome.

One thing I want to mention to you right off the bat- don't feel as though you have to pick just ONE area of VO to focus on. Although many people are big on finding their niche and staying in their niche and building their niche.....I would be homeless if I followed that advice- I do a little bit of everything and it works for me- I have an interesting mix of work- telephony, narration, commercial and other stuff- so don't feel pressured to pick just one.

That's all. Welcome to the dolphin pool.

Cake?

Key things, Philip is usually right.

Don't quit the day job right away

The longer you stay working on it, the further you'll get.

Everyone has a voice but no one has yours.

Practice practice practice.

Lee,

I don't know about you, but these days I'm usually running the manure spreader, not loading it. Wink
