Or in my case to NOT renew. $500 bet which I lost.
Operation unclutter continues. Am I a proud VU (voiceoveruniverse) member? No. More to come? No. More to go. |

i have divested myself of all p2p sites and have noticed nothing but a heavier wallet from lack of dues-paying. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Philip,
I reached the same conclusion on the e-LearningVoices.com site. A $500 investment that paid a (roughly) $1000 return isn't bad for a bet, but not so great as a long-term business building strategy. _________________ Be well,

I suppose the worst part (don't mind the gamble) was the audition process. Poor pay? The argument was "this is the market". No it isn't it's what you allow the market to get away with on a regular basis.
Lovely line form Top Gear on Sunday "Why do Aston Martin charge £140,000?"
A fellow presenter replied "because they can". |

I tried to join their roster, but I received an incoherent reply so I was spared the bother. I also told VU to go pound sand because of their pimping of the usual suspects and their "products". As for P2P, I'm using it for my niche marketing (global trans-atlantic voice overs and music production) and it's working for me. We all have to market ourselves - Andre Gide wrote "believe in that which exists only in yourself and thus make yourself indispensable". Do that for your clients, and you'll be okay. Go around chasing what the cool kids are doing and you'll be a cool kid with fewer clients. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I have a quick question about VU based on Philip's comment that he's not a part of it any more (which could be for a myriad of reasons all valid because they are his and for him...same is true for any one of us).
Do folks here see that site as anything more than a diversion? A sort of clubhouse for VO folks?
That's how I see it and I like it for just that reason (for the little amount of time I spend there). Design commentary not withstanding (A.S.) its a pleasant place to tool around.
Certainly there is an enormous amount of newbieism (might need a spell check for that) but that's OK.
Does anybody whose not in the coaching bidnez see it as anything more than that? _________________ - Peter

Left on Elm Street, right on Oak Street after the flashing yellow light, it'll be the third house on the right with the porch. _________________ - Peter

I go to VU once or twice a week whether I need to or not, but spend very little time there on the whole.
For me, it's a diversion at best, although I have made a couple of great VO friends there. My primary problem with VU is that I find the interface to be "clunky." Maybe there's too much media sucking up the bandwidth, but it's painfully slow for me.
Some of the groups are alright, but I also have a hard time with the "no soliciting" thing while being inundated with "offers" from various services within the context of posts...
I dunno...some of it seems like snake-oil to me. _________________ ab

VU for me.
Constructive use of time? No.
Professional resource? No.
Source of work? No.
Amusing diversion? No.
Place to make contacts or friends? No.
Started off well but appears to have slide in to no more than a low tick over mode. |

I check it every day. Spend a grand total of 20-30 seconds. About all I use it for these days is to check for birthdays. Same with Plaxo. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

VO-BB for me.
Constructive use of time? Yes... Until it becomes an addiction.
Professional resource? Yes... considering diversified VO related members.
Source of work? Occasionally... in the work section.
Amusing diversion? Yes... there's that addiction thing again.
Place to make contacts or friends? Yes... the choice is yours.
Is the VO-BB a clubhouse? Yes... no charge. _________________ "Bailey"
