Wow— this guy really shouldered a lot of the load that made this such a successful cartoon!

I am quite sad to hear of this man's passing. Speed Racer was my favorite cartoon as a boy, and I still enjoy watching episodes with my daughter on DVD. In all seriousness, the character of Speed Racer was a good role model for me: he was totally honest and ethical, never gave up, was kind to his adversaries (even when they didn't deserve it), and for a small young man, he fought like hell and always gave his best.

Speed Racer and Kimba the White Lion were both great role models for me, and helped inform my own moral center. No joke.

Kimba came on right after Speed Racer, and I tried never to miss either one.

Mr. Fernandez seems like he was a wonderful guy. I hope his life was as fun and happy as I imagine it to have been.

I vaguely recall seeing snippets of Speed Racer as a kid. I think it aired either right before or right after Star Blazers, which I watched fairly regularly. However, I never took the time to watch it, and don't recall hearing any of my friends talk about it, either. Not sure why.

Okay, from the same era and studios does anyone remember Prince Planet?

Those three were on the UHF a lot ...

For a pretty good trip down memory lane youtube search for mach5media and get a pretty comprehensive list of full episodes.

Listening to it now, and comparing it to today's standards I'm thinking that guy was a loooong way from doing a decent 18-year old. Although considering he did virtually every other voice on the thing, he did okay, I spose.
