VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I'm looking at two mics for recording VO on the go...


Zoom H2 Handy Recorder

OR
M-Audio MicroTrack II Portable Digital Recorder

then I read in a review that the M-Audio is better for recording music than spoken word (as in Voiceover auditions).

Does anyone have experience with either of these and any recommendations? I'm looking for the facility of recording VO, hooking up to a netbook, editing and sending it off; esp. thinking of using it for on-location podcasting.

post script: I just got a recommendation on the Zoom H4n from Andy B, AND I just found an old Gear forum discussion about that digi recorder as well. And there was a link to a YouTube tutorial too.

Hmmmm! This is good! I will go and price one now...and check my piggy bank, to see when one can be acquired.

Still open to other opinions as well though, it's not like I'm going out to buy it tomorrow.

I just picked one of these sweet little guys up for field recording at our radio station...it is mind blowing as far as fidelity goes. Especially Music Recording. Good investment for the price.

If your only purpose for the unit is to record VO, why not get a proper mic and USB built in? The mics inside all of these units are a definite compromise. I'd recommend spending the money on a PG42USB instead and plugging directly into your netbook.
All of these units tend to have a bit of a high noise floor with the internal mics, in my experience, until you get much more expensive.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll have to think on it. I envision using this recorder a lot for on-location podcasting. And perhaps when I'm travelling in Europe. Some Italian airport peeps are quite thorough (nice, but thorough!) so a small recording gadget that I could have in my purse is quite preferable to something in my bag which puzzles them and the machines, and then having to open it and have it searched!

I'm going to be attending PAX (a gaming convention) as a rep for an gaming-oriented Internet radio station I do a show for. Because I wanted to be able to do interviews and such in a really noisy convention hall and do on-location podcasting (and broadcasting) using my netbook, I did a bit of digging around and I'm currently using an M-Audio Fast Track II USB interface with a Shure Beta 58a.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for VO work- it might do in a pinch if you had a nice space to record in- but it's utterly portable, as the power comes from the USB and it can even do phantom power if need be. I just tuck the whole thing in my computer bag with the netbook placed so the fans aren't blocked and walk around with it.

Not *specifically* what you were asking about but the portability factor is a great thing. And it would be excellent for podcasting.
