Any other Windows XP users out there noticing a significant increase in the number of random crashes lately? (Please, no harping from Mac fans!). I have 2 PCs that I keep well-maintained, and I'm a fairly knowledgeable user. I have a feeling this is due to some recent MS updates. But when I tried using System Restore yesterday, it was unable to un-do recent updates. Am I the only one here?

Oh, spiffy. I just finished applying the updates (or most of them as one wouldn't install) to my Boot Camp partition.

My fingers are crossed...

Yeah, I have a bad feeling it is a conflict caused by one of the updates. I have automatic updates turned off on my audio PC. But yesterday I did a manual update, thinking that I could always use System Restore if I had issues. But infuriatingly, SR did not work despite multiple attempts!

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but the thought did cross my mind that Microsoft is doing this intentionally to "encourage" us to switch to Windows 7. Win 7 sounds great, but I don't want to have to update my software as well. XP has always been rock-solid stable for me, and that is of course EXTREMELY important. (I had a 45 minute phone patch session get lost by a crash a month or so ago!).

I'm pretty sure my XP machine underwent the same update recently (if not, I will be sure to not let it install the next one). As far as I know there have been no negative repercussions.
I did, however, notice a sharp decline in internet performance after upgrading to IE 8 from IE 7. I have solved that problem by switching to Chrome.

Yes, I've heard good things about Win 7. But I have serious doubts that my Echo Mia will play nicely with it. It's an old design, though still perfectly competitive.

Also, I'd probably have to upgrade to Sound Forge 10. I know Win 7 has an XP Compatibility mode, but I'm nervous that it won't work as planned. I don't want to be nervous about my equipment when I'm working for my clients, ya know?

tom - i thought i was crashing on one of my two trusty XP machines, but it turned out to be a monitor starting to die prematurely.

even the recent upgrades don't seem to have caused any trouble. 'hope you find your gremlins soon. let us know their names!

My XP crashed about 3 times in as many days. The suggestion from my carrier was that I needed to update my ATI driver. I ran the update last night... now waiting to see if that made a difference.

Allowing Windows Update to update my NVIDIA driver several months ago was defininitely the cause of major problems, so I don't trust Windows Update for any driver updates. But thanks for the suggestion in any case - i can go to the manufacturer's site to see if updating driver from them directly helps at all.

It's strange that it is happening on BOTH my PCs though. No viruses or spyware on either of them, I've checked.

On my main PC I use for recording, I am certain that I'm having issues with IE8 after the most recent updates. On my other PC, Word just crashed (it has NEVER done that before). And both PCs have had random crash/reboots over the past few weeks.

For what it's worth, I have an Echo Mia and made the switch to 7 with no major problems. Trick is to make sure you also have an onboard or second sound card to assign as your default, and just have your audio software use the Mia.

I have been experiencing painful slowness on my main editing and business tower and have had to do manual shut-downs twice in the past few days...update huh?

The recording tower seems OK so far.

I have two P-C's side by side, running Windows XP and Window's 7 (laptop)... Love windows 7 and the newer machine is faster and with way more memory. So I am used to my older tower running more slowly. Despite recent updates, no major issues with the old machine, which I use for nearly all editing.

My registry clean up found some issues today -- but easily fixed them. I'm not sure if there's any relationship.

Wikipedia says this about Coincidence: "Any given set of coincidences may be just a form of synchronicity, that being the experience of events which are causally unrelated, and yet their occurring together carries meaning to the person observing the events"

I looked up something else on Wikipedia and also got a completely meaningless answer. Must be a coincidence. Shocked
