These types of lists/stories seem to come out every year but they still are kind of enlightening:

"The Class of 2014 now has hundreds of channels to watch with nothing on, while their parents had at most a few dozen when they were growing up."

I had three. And to switch from one to another I had to get up, walk over to the TV, and physically turn a dial.

However, just like the kids in the Class of '14, I have for years used my cell phone or the dashboard of my car as a timepiece and can't remember the last time I wore a wristwatch.

Better old than dead.
I still wear a watch... can count back change... and can still work out a math problem with pencil and paper.

Well, we had a few more channels than Lee did...7 I believe. And we did have a remote. It was called "Mom". My Dad used to have her change the channel, adjust the rabbit ears and make her stand there until he decided he wanted to watch what was on that particular channel.

I remember coming home from school one day and my Dad telling me he had purchased a "color" TV. Wooooooaaaa...turns out it was one of those stupid tri-colored plastic screens you would tape to the front of the set. Unless you happened to be watching an outdoor scene of a meadow on a bright sunny day it was worthless!

I grew up in L.A. and we also had 7 channels:
2 CBS
4 NBC
5 KTLA-local
7 ABC
9 KHJ-local
11 KTTV-local
13 KCOP-local

Plus channel 52 (UHF) where you could enjoy fuzzy broadcasts of Kimba the White Lion and Speed Racer!

In a conversation with a mixed group the other day, someone asked if any of us could remember our first phone number growing up. I started out, "Crestwood 2..." and before I could finish I got the strangest looks from all the ones younger than me, including my DW. She encouraged me not to volunteer that information again.

Oh, and regarding television, I am told (and I am not old enough to remember this) during the early years of television we had just one station here in Phoenix and it ran programs from NBC, CBS, and the DuMont Network. The station manager would pick and choose the shows to run as he saw fit, so you were never guaranteed to see the same programs on any particular night.

Growing up in NH we had 4 tv stations- they were all free and fuzzy.

I remember on Sunday nights, I had to go to bed right after Topo Gigio was done on Ed Sullivan.

When I was a Cub Scout leader a few years back, one of the boys wanted to use my phone to call home, I showed him where my rotary phone was. He stared at it, then stared at me. "How do you make it go?" (I LOVED rotary phones and kept at least one in my house as long as possible).

My son was 10 years old when he saw his first LP. His eyes bugged out of his head, and he examined it like it was a moon rock- "Wow...it's soo....big"

I still use a Roladex in my office for important contact information.

I am old. Most of the time I'm okay with that.

I remember the old black HEAVY rotary phone that my parents RENTED from AT&T!....miss it.

We are also probably the last house on the planet that doesn't have a wireless phone in the house.....at least we don't have to go searching for the phone when it rings! Wink ...unless of course you call my cell Rolls Eyes ...then it's probably hiding somewhere....along with my coffee.

Ha! I was just thinking last week (as I searched for the phone)

Things we never said 20 years ago:

1. Where did I leave the phone?

2) Where are you?

(when calling someone's cell...when you called someone at home they were...HOME!)

Does this bother anyone else? I was taught to count back the change. When someone actually counts it back to me (a rare event) I always thank them. I was 7 when I learned that, working at the neighbor's vegetable stand and I had to do my math on a piece of paper and keep a roll of ones in my pocket.

We have one of those big, black rotary phones here. It hasn't been plugged in for a couple of years. Perhaps because we stopped talking to people we would argue with on the phone? The thrill of slamming the handset down was gone... Sarcastic
