Which reminds me of a question for my esteemed colleagues. I am in the habit of turning my refrigerators off (or nearly so) while recording, along with the a/c and anything else that irritates my sensitive aural nerves. This can happen several times a day as I turn them back ON before editing (well, there was that one Friday afternoon when it was forgotten. Until Sunday. Oh, the Haagen-Dasz!! The pizza! It was horrible).
So the question is this: does all that thermostat jiggling shorten the life of the appliance in any way? I'm unlikely to change my behavior either way, it's just one of those things I wonder about while I'm supposed to be doing something else.

I don't think it shortens the life of the appliance. They tend to go on and off a lot anyway, so they're kind of designed for that kind of thing- the thermostat and the relays it controls are intended to be activated pretty frequently.
What might affect it is if it's off for a significant period and needs to do extra work to bring things back to normal operating mode, as it may not be good for it to operate in a sustained mode frequently- like if you turn it off for several hours several times a week, the sustained operation after you turn it back on might have an effect on its longevity, but it might not.
Turning your computer on and off a lot can actually have a detrimental effect on its longevity, but modern systems are nowhere near as subject to that as older ones were.

If you have a whole house air conditioner, some utility companies can measure the sudden jolt of juice* your unit uses to turn on and charge you an extra fee for that, so you could end up paying a bit more than folks who leave their thermostat alone. Other than that there should be no problems if everything's in good working order.
