Hello. My name is Steve Geibel and I have been living at the periphery of VO for years. Having done some on screen acting, I feel that VO is a natural extension of my creative efforts.

That being said, I have a question.

I run all Macs in my world...what would be the best choice for a recording software so that I can make a reasonably professional demo reel?

I have had some people tell me that Garage Band and even iMovie would work, but I would be interested to see what you folks think. I'd rather keep the cost to a minimum (for now), but am willing to spend as much as it takes after I start getting some work from it.

Thank you in advance.

Pro Tools has an insane learning curve though.

Steve,

Some people do use Garage Band. Audacity is an open source audio editor (free) that has a version for Mac. I know several people on Macs who use Twisted Wave and are very happy with it. Pro Tools will certainly work and the LE version has some pretty cost effective options. It's not that much harder to learn than any other audio editor. At least it hasn't been for me.

Hi Steve,

First, just as a stage or a screen actor would not take their own headshot, a voice actor should not make their own demo.

My first recordation it Logic Express, this is a Mac Program, (about $90), it has all the bells and whistles that you will ever need for VO. FYI- Many folks I know have switched over form ProTools to Logic Pro.

Adobe is coming out with a Beta version of Adobe Audition for Mac.

I think Logic Express is more expensive than that— Apple lists it at $199.

You may be able to get it cheaper— B&H is listing it for $159 right now.

I've been very happy using Reaper. Because I'm still building my business, I qualified for their discounted license, which appears to have dropped from $60 to $40 since I purchased it a few months ago.
