The lead in to my VO demo CD and other marketing material reads "...........just another voice over". Mainly because I am.

As I surf an internet and suffer the results of the literally seconds effort people put in to branding themselves as voiceoverists I sigh and tut. Here are some real examples and some I invented

"The voice of authority"
"The voice of choice"
"Sounds like a complete eejit"
"Melted chocolate"
"Warm velvet"
"Rich bitch with no talent and far too much time on her hands"
" ...for all your voice over needs"
"THE voice of your success"
"Letting YOU put words in MY mouth"
"Needs the money, two Border Collies to feed"
"Seldom heard - Often ignored"
"Forget ISDN if you've never published a book"
"Use the man with a duvet over his head to give your business a well covered head start"
"From School Mistress to sex kitten (uniforms $20 extra)"

But, they will argue, it's my brand. I believe that's not for them to decide.

Two cats. One sack.
The fingernail on the blackboard of your mind.
As heard at the end of the moving sidewalk at LAX.
Like Ernie Anderson. Only way meaner.
A bargain at half the price.
Mmmmm...voicey!

Poignant stuff!

My favourite comment ever came from a marketing expert who really managed to show my complete lack of knowledge.

"Well, Philip's brand is obviously The British Voice"

I'm told he also came up with "Coca Cola - it's a sparkling beverage" which was rejected due to a board room power struggle and NOT because it was pants.

More branding outside the box...way outside:

The Voice that Strikes a Cord with Your Audience
The Vox Box that Rocks
The Choice Boy's Voice (for young Mr. Ellis)
More Voice for your Buck (Quid)
From God's Ear to My Lips
The Lip Service That Sells!
The Mouth That Roared
From Loud and Proud to Soft and Supple Voiceovers
The Voice That's Launched a Thousand Ads
Oral Master of the Universe

Here are mine

I need Work

For a Fat Guy I don't breath Hard

I'm your Man, but I'll need full payment upfront

Is this thing on?

Yes, this long gun in my hand is compensating for one or more shortcomings

The best voice talent at 1064 ELm Street.

10% of all my payments will go to help save the narwhals

The voice as smooth as Haggis

I can't just plug it into the little hole on the side of my laptop?

I've got your e-learning v.o. right here.

Hire me to do your v.o. or the kitten gets it.

Marco Polo Marco Polo

My parole officer said I have a nice voice.

Not just a voice, but a voice that after one listen will make you cough blood and rush out and buy anything I tell you to.

Oh yeah, what do you know? I'm the voice of Blythesdale Chevrolet.

Oh and for the record, while pants is a pretty good word, trousers is considerably better.

knickers and bloomers are also way up there.

However culottes & capris are just so so. And pedalo pushers falls somewhere in the middle

Ha! Great stuff.

It's really hard to stand out when so many people use similar tag lines; I stopped counting just now when a quick Google search turned up 29 Exclamation VOs who use the term "Voice of Choice."

And how about another nebulous descriptor: Voiceover Guy? All of these sites exist:

Voiceoverguy.org
Voiceoverguy.tv
TheVoiceoverguy.com
TheVoiceoverguy.biz
MyVoiceoverguy.com
OurVoiceoverguy.com

Strangely enough, VoiceoverGuy.com is not an active voiceover site.

Here's another one I found recently:

"The man of a couple voices." Classic!

Suburban.

As a guest on the 'TONIGHT' show with the late Johnny Carson some years ago, Mel Brooks was telling the story of a guy claiming to be 'The Man of a Thousand Faces.' Mel screwed his face into several amusing contortions and then said something along the lines of, "How many faces can someone do... six? Ten? A thousand faces... yeah."

We like to embellish. Returning one afternoon with a friend to his home, the route takes us to an intersection about 100 yards or so from a school. We happened to get there just as school was letting out, and had to wait for three or four school buses to go by. When we got back to my friend's house, his wife asked what took so long. His reply: "We had to wait for a MILLION school buses!"

You'll note that I use "Voice Over Guy" as part of my signature here at the VO-BB. The reason is nothing more than "Lee" could be either a voice over guy or a voice over gal and I included the descriptor when I first signed up here to indicate which.
