Question for Mike Sommer--
So I was perusing the famous Cashman booth build thread--gorgeous of course--and I have a question regarding the floating floor you describe.
I notice that the floor went in after the walls--Now I didn't see detail of what the floor is floating on--u-boats, rubber "hockey pucks"? But my question is, if the walls are built right on the concrete floor, is there actually much advantage to having the floor floating. There is , by most accounts, very little noise transmission through a concrete floor (though there is some) .
Does this question make sense? |

Makes perfect sense to me. No point in plugging the funnel to stop a boat leaking. |

Easy.
Here in California we these things things called earthquakes. Every wall or structure needs -by CODE- to be tied or strapped down, or it will end up down the street. Because of this we could not build on top of the floating floor system pictured in the build. . .
But I have a secret as to how I isolated the walls from the concrete pad. It went in just before the interior walls were drywalled because it took a few weeks to get the material, and it was not pictured because it is a secret. And that's all I'm willing to say on that, other than the walls were isolated.
But the floating floor system is Model SR Floorboard. _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

'Bout time you have a secret, Mike! You give out so much info, we all learn from it. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

But it's knowing what to do with the information, that's what counts.
Building a studio is akin to building a hospital; very specialized, and not just any guy can do it correctly. Acoustics and isolation rely on very specific skills, materials, and products. Misuse or mistakes can completely ruin either one.
It also requires careful attention to detail, most builders do not know what to look for, or grasp the whole process. And the last place you need someone learning on the job is with your studio. _________________ The Blog:
