although i've been a member for a while, this is my first post so hello to all for starters! :DD

anyway, being a student and this being college application time, life has been super duper busy. but since my work is all behind me, i'm hoping for some pointers. where should i look as far as some extra experience in voice overs? i'm doing my own work on my computer but i'm looking for a little more...i'm hoping to get a leg up on my college competition!! :DD

Hi Sarah, and welcome aboard.

Your number one sales tool is a minute long demo showing samples of your abilities, and a website you can refer people to so they can hear it. CD's of your demo are nice to have too, but a website is key these days.

Your next set of tools are shoe leather, a dialing finger, searching the Internet, and emailing. You have to tell the world you do voice over and let them know you're available.

The first place I might look for work is right there on campus. Do you have a radio or TV station there? Is there a video production facility on campus? If it's a big enough school there might be several departments that create their own audio and video presentations. Offer to help. It might be free or low paying work to start....but it's experience under your belt. Boston is loaded with schools of higher learning...maybe you can reach out to them as well.

From there, the possibilities are endless.

B

Welcome to the VO-BB! Bruce has given you some excellent advice. I'm glad to see you're planning to take it. You'll do well.

Sarah... Welcome to the VO-BB. I'm sure others will add to what Bruce has suggested. You can also search for topics in the Archives. Lots of good info to be found there. You may even consider posting your "mini demo" in the Critique area. Sometimes other sets of ears can be very helpful. No one has been bitten yet.
Smile

Welcome Sarah~! And thank you for the introduction- that first post is the hardest. Smile Hope we see much more of you. My daughter is in the throws of applying to college as well - so you have an automatic special place in my heart. (we went to an open house at her 'back up school' yesterday- they lost the dean. no kidding. Yea.)

Anyway Sarah, Your plan:

The college radio station at Skidmore is where I did my very first voice overs, djing, news reading and production work. I was a theater major who discovered radio in college- ended up the general manager my senior year- it's a great experience- a place where you can learn hands on- and it's a safe place where you're able to makes as many mistakes as you want, and move on unscathed.. Go for it~!

I would also suggest you check out acting classes at the college- you'll find great vocal training, and develop and hone your acting chops- something that can make a difference between an okay vo and a good vo.

Welcome aboard and good luck on your journey. How exciting to be just at the start of it all. Smile
