...is that a GOOD thing?
am faced with the prospect of having to replace one of my two computers and remember the absolute disaster windows vista was because it wouldn't acknowledge many drivers from programs people had used for years.
does the comparative silence mean the new platform plays nicer with things like sony vegas and adobe audition 1.5 and the like?
your experience and comments would be valued. _________________ rowell gormon

Back in May I had to make the switch from XP to Windows 7. My new PC has Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit edition and I am able to use Adobe Audition 1.5 without any problem. It did "complain" during installation that it couldn't install properly because some component was outdated. However, once I closed the notification and launched the program everything was fine. Maybe there is some advanced feature of the program that I don't use on a daily basis that doesn't work but beats me what it is. I have no problems what so ever.
That said...I couldn't get Sony Vegas Pro 8 to work. I had to upgrade to 9 which was a rather expensive proposition. In hindsight...I might have been able to get Vegas Pro 8 to work had I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and used the Virtual Windows XP mode.
Quickbooks 2006 wouldn't install for me...Had to upgrade to Quickbooks 2010 and then had to run the "Update" to be able to print PDFs.
The version of Acrobat Pro that I had on XP won't install...since I didn't use it that much I didn't bother upgrading.
I couldn't get Grass Valley's ProCoder 3 to work either.
I opted for Sorenson Squeeze and that works fine. Again...I wonder if the Virtual XP mode in Windows 7 Pro would have helped.
Anyway...good luck! _________________ Tony Impieri

Rowell,
I would definitely go with Win7 Pro rather than Home Premium, even though it's a bit more expensive just because you do get more flexibility with the WinXP mode option. There will be stuff (as Tony noted above) that you'll have to upgrade, just because it's such a big shift. _________________ Be well,

thank you...this is just what i needed to hear.
i believe the trusted folks at intrex are planning on installing the "pro" version, because they mentioned it being able to operate in XP mode, or something like that. i'm talking to them about it this afternoon, so will be sure to clarify. (man, i love dealing with tech people locally, don't you?)
very grateful for the encouraging words. sounds like my old version of vegas (version 5) might be the only snag, but i'll deal with it. _________________ rowell gormon

I bought a new computer recently from Dell that had Windows XP installed, but also provided a Windows 7 Professional disc in case I wanted to go that route. First thing I did was reinstall XP to clear it of the bloat-ware that it shipped it. Getting it to recognize my devices and find suitable drivers was HORRIBLE. I've reformatted a number of times with older machines and never had that problem to that extent. I finally gave up and bit the bullet and installed Windows 7 Pro. It automatically found the devices and installed drivers without any work on my part. A breeze. I had to upgrade some of my software but in the end, it was worth it. I think it's a little faster than XP too. _________________ Joe Szymanski
