No, it's not another cryptic audition script direction, but it's just as weird.
While it's usually a great thing when your server stats tell you your mp3 demos are being accessed, my server stats over the past week or so tell me that not only are my demos being accessed, but they are being played or downloaded repeatedly from the same ip address. One day, one ip address will download every single demo I have several times... in a single session. Another day, a different ip address shows up doing the same thing. And on and on; each time a different ip address.
I'm a bit suspicious, though, because no matter what ip address it is, the computer on the other end is running the same computer OS/browser configuration.
I know about bandwidth theft, and to prevent it, my files are not accessible unless the user is visiting my site. Attempts to download by other means are blocked.
What am I not understanding? Why would someone download multiple copies of the same file, whether they actually wanted them or not? Is this someone with no life and is easily amused by downloading the same thing over and over, or is it someone who has no life and who has decided to intentionally run up my bandwidth usage?
Any ideas? _________________ Mike

Sounds like bots at work. They sample your media and log it for search. |

That's what I was thinking as well. I see that a lot in my stats too. _________________ Tony Impieri

By far the bots that search my sites the most are Chinese bots. Hmmmm. Makes you wonder that they're up to.

It could be a Chinese vo talent learning a Mike Harrison accent.
Or, as has been mentioned, it could just be a bot. Most likely the latter.
My site is blocked for some parts of Asia, because all I've gotten from there has been spam.
So, either block that segment of IP's (if your host let's you use wildcards 123.456.***.***) or tell your tracker (or whatever stat system you use) to ignore that area when giving you your reports (I do this with eXTReMe Tracking.)

Yeah, it's probably the bots. And I'm thinking that's what it is now that I looked more closely at the time stamps. Looking at the log I have open now, twenty files are accessed at the same second. Another clue is (altho I have little HTML knowledge) the HTML status code 206 for those attempts. Whereas status 200 is 'OK' (a normal response), status 206 is:
Quote: | 206 Partial Content
The server is delivering only part of the resource due to a range header sent by the client. |
Only one thing still puzzles me, and that is that sometimes the first in a series of accesses is clearly a referral from another website. I don't know if bots follow links from one site to another, but that's how they're appearing in the log. Or, in another case, the visit is the result of a Google search (the keywords are displayed).
But this just now dawned on me: my new website is based in WordPress, and the mp3 files are 'converted' to a player. Is it possible that what I'm seeing is the loading of all the demos as the page builds? I'm beginning to think that might be the case, as one of the ip addresses is very close to my own. _________________ Mike
