VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

It came wayyy earlier than I thought...An actual reall LIVE PHONE CALL!!! MY first REAL job!!
Its for a 4 minute presentation....they should be sending the script soon, but they asked about listeneing in...I do not have ISDN...I know it can be done with a cell but I just wanted an idea of how to go about it....I am sooo worried about messing this up.......

What I do these days is plug an earpiece/mouthpiece thingie into the headset jack of my cordless phone and put my big ol' studio headphones on over that.

Before I had the earpiece thing I'd hold a phone to one ear and have the headset on the other, but I didn't always have the best bead on my sonic quality that way.
I use the earpiece/mic thing all the time.

Good luck! I had that experience early on in my business and put them on speaker phone, warned them about the garbage truck, told the dog to be quiet, and worried an awful lot before it all came together. It came together nicely. Wouldn't you know it I've not had that request since!
But I'll use the earpiece- thingy/headphone-addendum/microphone-on trick if it does!

I have a phone patch now for when someone wants to direct but not use ISDN. But I also have a good speaker phone for emergencies. If they have a mute button on their end, then you are sure to be OK.

I use an economical phone patch of sorts from Radio Shack.

Start with phone. Plug phone into adaptor thingy. Headset Control Module (RadioShack Direct Connect Headset Control Module Cat. # 43-2013) plugs into adaptor thingy, and the other end of the phone controller goes to a headset/microphone. A second adaptor thingy has to plug into the first adaptor thingy with a long cord plugged into THAT, which plugs into the (in this case rather distant) wall jack. It's much simpler than it sounds.

I can't find a catalogue number for the RadioShack headset I use. It cost maybe $20.

The system works great. I don't use headphones when I record, so I don't have that to worry about.

I use speakerphone direction a lot.

My method is to put the speaker phone right next to the actual mic - that way you can hear the direction in your headphones without another earpiece, and the listener is hearing what you are speaking into the mic at the right volume. Mostly I opt not to use headphones anyway,

The only drawback is that if the listener speaks during recording, you've lost the take. Most clients understand that, however.

Once I'm set up with that, I make sure I am close to the recording controls to keep an eye on clipping etc.

I've used this method for a lot of sessions - for broadcast promos, animations, you name it, and I like it because it's technology light. My clients like it too.

When I used phone patch it seemed to cause so many problems or go wrong, it's a relief to have something this easy. Even with a phone patch, the client is listening on a phone line, so the difference in quality is minimal to none.

I have a usb mic plugged into the computer, and a set of headphones..but I cannot hear myself when I record (I use audacity) I just record and play back and listen. How Do I get it to where I can hear myself while Im recording???

Hi Bettie!! I can hear myself fine during playback...its just during when Im recording myself I dont hear anything....ill keep fiddling...
Great pics mcm!!! Thanks for taking the time to post them I dont have a land line at the moment....mabey I can get it to work on the cell????
I have learned so much from everyone here!!! I think it would be great to get all of this info into a book and call it VO-BB survival tips...
