How exactly do spammers get your email address? You could set yourself up with a new user (especially if you have your own domain) and in a couple of weeks start getting spam!!! It seems like it's becoming more and more of the pr0n variety.

This morning, I mistakenly deleted an email from HarryandDavid (love their fruits and snacks) because the subject said "Ripe and ready: Juicy..." - when I realized my mistake I noticed the entire subject was "Ripe and ready: Juicy Oregold Peaches, fresh from our orchards" - damn you spammers!!!

Anthony,

I regularly read the WindowsSecrets newsletter, published twice a month and filled with good information on all things Windows. But, regardless of whether you're running Windows, Mac, or Linux there's also solid information available about a number of subjects, including dealing with spam.

http://windowssecrets.com/comp/060216/

That issue includes a good bit of information on the subject. But a subscription is a good investment (it's available free and paid, with the paid version longer and more details) for anyone doing their own computer (especially Windows) support.

The short answer to your question: they harvest email address from the web, usenet and anywhere else on the Internet they can find them.

Thanks for that link Bob. I'm not ready for YET another subscription though Wink

Anthony,

You're quite welcome. Their site has a search engine tuned to several relevant computer/Windows specific sites, including their own archives, so you might find useful information there even without another subscription.

And I can say that using some of the suggestions I gleaned from that newsletter, and from my ISP's support forum, I've been able to eliminate 99.9% of the spam I was dealing with a year ago. (Specifically, from 100 a day then, down to a few a week now.)
