Is there a cure for sorrow? Is there a treatment that will make us forget the things we wish had never happened? Is there a magic wand we can wave each time life begins to get us down? Actually, there is. It doesn't come in liquid, tablet or powder. It's called 'gratitude'. You don't need anyone to apply it for you or to you. You just have to reach into your own inner well of experience and draw up all that you have for which you should give thanks. Despite all you may resent or regret, all that gives rise to fear or fury, life is a gift and each moment is to be treasured. |

And if that doesn't work, then try the drugs and alcohol? _________________ j.s. gilbert

Absolutely, gratitude for your blessings works. I'm not an Oprah Winfrey follower, but she covered the healing powers of thankfulness in her show some time back. She recommended taking time every day, maybe the end of the day, thinking about what you're particularly thankful for at the time. Write it down in a thankfulness book if you like. It can provide great relief and even healing.
I've been narrating, reading and consuming a lot of information about life in the "good old days" lately, and there is very little in the way of medicine, technology, ethics or morality that I'd like to return to in decades and centuries past. Bill Bryson's new book "At Home" will likely alone convince you of that if you aren't already.
Thank you, Philip.

Philip,
I'm grateful for your post and grateful for the many friends I've made here on the VO-BB and for the numerous opportunities we've had to make those relationships manifest in the real world and for my family and for all the work and on and on the list goes. I do love this little corner of the Internet! _________________ Be well,

So very true Banskey - thanks for the reminder. Ironically, when you need to practice gratitude the most is when it's the hardest to do....but if you practice it frequently enough it is easier when you do need it most.
