So last Friday we're cooling our heels in Northern California trying to decide whether to brave the snows across the Cascades or wait another day. So I call 511 on my cell and get the California Department of Transportation information line. It is all automated and the voice they chose is a woman with a distinct Asian-American accent. Going through the menu she finally asks what highway do I want travel information on.

I say, "I-5".

There's a pause and she says, "Interstate 5...conditions will be...." etc. etc.

When she's disgorged all the information in perfect robotic style she asks is there another highway I'm interested in. Not really, but I decide to say, "Highway to Hell".

There's a pause and she says, "California 20...there are construction delays from...."

So Golden Staters, you've been forewarned.

Hah, that's great. I wonder if it's intentional- probably not.

But it would be really funny if it was.

Probably too late now, but why didn't you opt for the coastal route?

We wrestled with that. The last forecast we had before the turn-off to San Francisco and the coastal route was light rain and snow in the mountains. By the next morning it got much worse. To go the coastal route from Anderson, CA, backtracking almost to San Fran, would have added about 400 miles to the journey. We were exhausted anyway from two days of hard driving and several days of packing so rest made it a good option too.
