My favorite voice actor has been James Arnold Taylor for a while now. Not only is he talented, but he just showed how gracious he can be as well.

A brief back story- my daughter is only 5, and loves Cake Boss. Well, my sister-in-law caught wind of it, and contacted that bakery, and they sent my daughter an autographed card as well as her 'flat stanley' which officially went to the bakery. So I wanted to return the favor.

That same sister-in-law has a son who is 11, and like me, loves Star Wars. I went out on a limb and emailed JAT humbly asking if he'd be willing to record a special Christmas greeting for him, and I offered to produce it. To my surprise, he responded quickly with a recording of his Obi-Wan voice (for anyone who doesn't know, among many others, JAT voices Obi-Wan on the current Clone Wars cartoon). He told me it was very rare he sends out dry voice like that, but was trusting enough to let me produce it. I just finished it, and it sounds great! It will be a truely special Christmas for the nephew.

I just had to share it with someone, and knew the VOBB folks would appreciate it. What a cool guy. A few links for JAT below

I wish someone would have had Mark Hamill record a message for me when I was 11...

I haven't had the chance to meet JAT in person yet, but I've swapped some Facebook and Twitter messages with him. He has great rapport with fans. Thanks for sharing that story. (BTW, you've got PM.)

QFT. I've had the chance to meet a lot of them at cons, and they were all great experiences. Got to have breakfast with Bob Bergen once, before he was doing his one-man show -- it was in development at the time and he gave a preview for like 20-mins that morning. It was like getting a private concert.

Had dinner with Corey Burton at a restaurant in Burbank almost 10 years ago. He's such a great guy and so humble. Even surprised me by picking up the tab because he remembered it was my birthday (and I didn't even bring it up!).

I could share plenty of other stories like this, but I don't want to bore you guys. But I have to say it wasn't just the performances by 'toon voice actors that influenced my desire to become one myself. It was after meeting some of them in person that really cemented it. They were so not typical Hollywood types. Just friendly, personable, approachable people who seemed very grateful for fan appreciation of their work. I wanted to be like that too.

I actually have a recording somewhere on an old cassette of Mark doing a greeting as Joker that I was going to put on my answering machine.

...if that tells you how long ago that was.

I've had the chance to meet Mark at a few cons. Was even invited to a private press junket he held in his hotel room when he was promoting "Comic Book: The Movie" -- which I also got to appear in! I've been in a movie with Mark Hamill! How cool is that! (BTW, JAT has a cameo in the film too.)

Anyway, Mark (along with Billy West, Jess Harnell and Roger Rose) talked about the movie for 10 minutes, and then talked about his geek hobbies for 2 hours (comic book movies, cartoons, comics, and toys). And here's da proof that I was there:

I also have the honor of inadvertently starting an internet rumor about Mark -- fallout from an April Fools article gag I wrote for toonzone.net years ago.

If you'd like to read that tale, it's in an archive edition of the old fanzine version of my blog -- scroll down for the "LOOK AT ALL THESE RUMORS" headline:
